Pool sessions 2013
« on: January 29, 2013, 02:35:09 »
Hey guys,

After a discussion with the lifeguards last Thursday here are some rules and guidelines for pool use that, if followed, should keep our relationship with the lifeguards as good as it's been so far:

Standard
- always wear a hat

Mentioned specifically
- don't stand on boats
- don't hold on to the lane ropes
- leave enough of a gap to avoid hitting the lane ropes with your paddles as you go by

Important
- if you're learning to roll or practicing a new roll, make sure you have someone beside you
We all know we can pull our decks and get out fine, but the lifeguards were worried about less experienced people who appeared to be struggling and had no one around to help. If you're learning a roll you should be getting feedback or instruction from somebody anyway or could just ask a friend to stay nearby, so this seems reasonable.

- keep the polo ball in our section at all times
Very important, if the ball goes in to a swimming lane we will not be allowed to use a ball in the pool again (this has been said by management so it's final), so the consequences of getting this wrong are huge for the club, since we'd lose our best opportunity to train for polo on campus.

The majority of the feedback of our use of the pool has been very positive, so it's worth keeping a good thing going and avoiding situations that could stress the relationship with the lifeguards or pool staff.

Hopefully we're all on the same page now and can keep enjoying all the best parts of the pool  8)

I'm adding an extra rule: at least 3 minutes per session of gazing starry-eyed at te shinyness of the super fancy new pool. Mandatory.

UPDATE:

Thank you:
I know everyone was in top form last night and did a great job of making the refreshers feel welcome and of showing them how much fun the club is, thanks very much to everyone who came out, coached or did meeting and greeting :)

Steam room/jacuzzi/sauna:
After a chat with the lifeguards here are some guidelines for that area
- make sure there's space left for people not in the club to use the facilites
- don't throw or drop ice on the ground
- don't wrestle
- don't shout

I know everyone was just having the banter and one lifeguard just said to "chill the beans" (sound) but it was also mentioned that if we're in there in a big group making a mess and being loud that we won't be allowed to use it at our sessions anymore.

Obviously no one wants that, so even though it's pretty hot in there, try to chill 8)

Tuesday 5th of February:
Visitor
Charlie Solan (the boss!) will be coming to see polo played in the pool to get an idea of how it works/doesn't work.
Best case scenario the outcome of this visit will be that he sees that we're safe and controlled enough to continue using some pool sessions for polo training, but sees that it's very awkward and when making out the timetable for next year's pool sessions will try and give us a half pool (25m x 25m) one night a week.

Outline
Normal pool session should run from 21:00-21:40*
Varsity polo training will run from 21:40-22:30*
*subject to change, but will be updated if so

Thursday 7th of February:
Pending the outcome of Tuesday's session we plan to run varsity polo training again at this session.

Note:
If you've just joined, this is fairly unusual, normally coaching runs from 21:00-22:00 at least, but varsities are on from the 8th-10th of February, so players gotta train! :)
