Paddle-Fit!
Zog:
Howdy folks! So I've got onto a few people in the club that are currently studying health and performance and physio about organising some land training in the club to help us all improve our paddling fitness! The training will be nothing crazy at all and its suitable for absolutely everyone, we're going to aim to train together in a group, so we can all have maximum banter ;) . So if you're interested in getting paddle-fit just stick your name down in a comment! The more the merrier! 8) 8) 8)

Great idea, I’m more than happy to help out if needed! I’m currently doing something similar with the UCD rowers and sailors so I’m used to working with people that belong in boats......or “mermaids” as they refer to them in the S&C gym!!
Kayaking itself is obviously a great workout but additional land training helps to:
• build the muscle tissues needed to give you more power in your strokes
• build endurance for long trips (preserve energy for partying after…)
• reduce injury risk (including recurring shoulder dislocations, however unfortunately will not assist in the prevention of tooth chipping when diving headfirst into shallow water)
• makes rolling easier (….wish I knew that one sooner!!!)
• stops your feet going numb when paddling! (actually true, didn’t just make that one up!)
• reduce the risk of death from exhaustion when battling to escape from a strainer...
.....dammit Zog why didn’t you come up with this idea two months ago and I could have knocked an assignment out of it???
Let me know if there’s anything I can do in terms of equipment borrowing/gym access also :D
Steven Mul:
Is it possible for us, as a club, to get access to either the team gym in the high performance gym or even to the gym over in the sports science building? Or is that reserved for elite teams and scholarship people?

The sports science gym will only allow elite teams, I'm not certain how the team gym works but I imagine if you give them a good enough reason they won't refuse you, I know a few people working there so will ask them nicely :)
If there's a lot of people interested, trying to get some hall/studio space might be an option either???
