Something a little different...
Maryanne:
What a day!
TRAILER
The trailer was completely emptied after Varsities and all the long distance boats were put back on their racks, which leaves us ready to go for our next trip! Sincere thanks to everyone who helped with that, I had a misunderstanding with my alarm clock and missed it... *pulls at collar awkwardly*
FREESTYLE
Dave Byrne dropped by with space in his car and an open invitation to go playboating, so he, Leighton and Gareth went to sluice, sounds like they were set up for a pretty amazing day! How did you get on guys?
OUTFITTING
Then Livia, Dani and Darina outfitted themselves a boat each with a full compliment of footblocks, bits of camping mats and piles of foam to make them as snug and comfortable as possible, nice one ;D
BOATHOUSE TRANSFORMATION
Having a look around the boathouse we realised a little spring cleaning wouldn't go amiss...(warning, huge understatement!) It started innocently enough, we needed to got to the loft, and didn't have room to set up the ladder (the big one we thought had been stolen by sailors, turns out it was just behind the small trailer) so we started to put a few boats back on the private rack where they belonged. This soon escalated into a full scale assault involving me climbing into various, tiny, high-up places and being passed boats by Darina, Livia, Clare, Dani, Carla and Victoria. That top rack is pretty high! And you may have noticed...we're not exactly the tallest bunch ;) so when you see the private rack next, feel free to marvel; it's a thing of beauty!
Next we put all the older gear neatly up in the loft, hung up all the best gear and devised a new hanging system for the helmets that lets their trough be used for airbags, extra footblocks, foam and spare parts. We went through all the lost and found, found a lot of it was mouldy and moved it in to the skip around the corner. We found the sign from the freshers stand (UCD CANOE CLUB: the worst influence on freshers) and hung it up at the back, so the place is looking pretty slick!
RESULT!
The loft is tidy and organised, the door is working way better since we greased it, the gear is all hung up, the floor is swept, every boat is on a shelf...what a transformation, I stood staring at it all for a good ten minutes at the end, mostly trying not to choke up... ;)
So...
THANK YOU CARLA! THANK YOU DANI! THANK YOU LIVIA! THANK YOU DARINA! THANK YOU VICTORIA! THANK YOU CLARE! THANK YOU LEIGHTON! THANK YOU GARETH!
And nice to see you Cathy, I hope scuba diving went well!
And a mention to Mark Ahern who came over and made everyone's day.
WACKO ON THE JACKO
BEST OF LUCK MATT, NUALA, KAREN and any other UCD folk!
************************************************************************************************
Hey everybody!
Great work to everyone who came along to Varsities last weekend, UCD came 6th overall, 5th in freestyle, 4th in whitewater and unofficially 1st in men's general purpose long distance (Nice one Gareth!)
Check out Matt's blog post for all the insider info-> http://ucdcanoeclub.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/intervarsities-2011/
This weekend there is a whitewater race called Wacko on the Jacko taking place in Wicklow, a good few people from the club are competing and we wish them the best of luck!
This means we are a little shy on rescue and since it's coming up to week seven (and all the midterms that brings) we've decided to do something a little different and have a social day this Saturday ;D
Here's an outline of the day:
10:00 meet at the boathouse
HOUSEKEEPING
-empty the trailer from Varsities
-rehome/bin/give away lost and found from Lahinch
PERSONAL PADDLING
-let people outfit boats (add footblocks/foam for example)
-do some ropethrowing, and maybe other games
**interlude in which anyone in the shadow of upcoming midterms can illuminate themselves in the library**
SOCIAL
-relive and retell the best bits of Varsities (if you were there)
-experience the retelling of the best bits of Varsities (if you weren't there)
-general bonding
-GET TICKETS FOR THE BALL!
EVENING ACTIVITY
-arrange to all go to the cinema that night/evening
PERKS
I'm cleaning out the kitchen at the minute and I have a few boxes of chocolate, sweets, chocolate biscuits and other miscellaneous edibles...so I thought I'd just make a delicious buffet!
I'll also bring along some speakers and a laptop, so we can still sing along, even if there's no bus! (Feel free to bring your own ipods/mp3 players, my taste in music is fantastic, but I'm open to new experiences)
SO SIGN UP AND COME ON DOWN!
