Title: New teeth new problems
Post by: kmck on December 10, 2007, 16:12:11
Okay as some of you know I got my new teeth. I have a question should I get a helmet with a face guard? Second question does anyone know of an insurance policy for teeth, they are 21 grand after all. Dave what do you have for yours or fuzzy.

i was told to wear a gumshield or something. does that help?? i would definately advise getting them insured because they were so expensive, i dont see why you couldnt, and they are soooo easy to break, fucking teeth.

Have a look at the Storm Trooper of the X-Stream. If you break one ( on the water ), it will be replaced for free.

Everyone need a sweet helmet only €295.00
http://www.mdac.ie/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=879

And although not an impossible injury a rear one on the water and I wouldn't ware a helmet to the pub. Even in this club.

...likin' the new grill Kieran.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

...deffo get insurance if you can.......all the money, pain and time..... :'(

...just thinking also that the insurance company might require specifc head gear doing "sports" (especially if you specifically insure your teeth) so maybe no choice.... ???

Also why is this in the GEAR section....... ;D...oh shit I see why.....doh... :-[

That sweet Helmet is pretty cool but i've worn it and it does limit what you can see. You lose a good bit of peripheral vision. And it is amazingly hot in it!! You could try get one of the proper gumshields made that Hurling players and boxers wear but that will limit what u can say on a river without having to be constantly taking it in and out using your dirty, river water soaked, hands!! You could always get a polo face guard and use that, wouldnt offer as much protection as the sweet but wouldn't impair your vision as much.

a well-fitting gumshield shouldn't obstruct your speech too much. just make sure it hangs onto your upper teeth when you open your mouth.

i needed one for gaelic football when i had braces and i think you'd be better off with a proper helmet, you have to get a special ortadontic gum shield hard to buy and really annoying. get the helmet clip in for you sweet shouldn't be very expensive seeingas you've already bought the helmet emai l them a s ask.

A girl I work with has a cousin who makes gum shileds for sports people in their team colours etc. Maybe you could get a cool Disco Paddler on a gum shield if you wanted??

Let me know.

Just a thought, but are you comparing your teeth to J-Lo's Ass or Sam Fox's Boobs? They are/were insured.

hey kmck
i had a similar problem during my paddling prime (no need to laugh) and tried paddling with a gum guard but being the graceful sporting person i am it got dislodged easily and i thought i was going to choke in splashy water. (thought i had similar issues skiing too)- not so much fun.
greg b might have some words of wisdom...?
that sweet helmet looks the best bet
(but im not quite the paddling gear expert)

also i'd love to know what you come up with regarding dental insurance as im going to have to get some for next year. dave cox might have some insights

I don't reckon a full face helmet is worth it and frankly gum shields are a pain in the bollocks.

My teeth came  out on the river bank( but I always neglect to mention that if i've any beer in me).

They've never been touched while i've been in my boat.

Just tuck up and you'll be fine

Or do a cian Lyons on it and put your head right back on your back deck....

And replacing fake teeth in less painfull than replacing real teeth. But only just.

J.P. Priwett the former hand model in Zoolander, kept in hand in a hyperbaric chamber, maybe KMCK could write to him and get a hyperbaric chamber for his teeth.

Yesterday I was talking to kate while invigilating. I said how I had put up a post looking for advice on this topic. She said had degenerated into the usual stuff a post on the board becomes. I said no. I really should have waited till I checked yesterday evening. Anyway if you have more useful advice please give it.

You got a load of pretty concise answers there KMcK, What were you expecting?

The topics usually run off the wall cos you run every piece of gear you want to buy past the message board. Of course we take the piss.

If you think you need something just walk into a shop and buy it.

My advice: If your gonna spend 21 grand on something, you might want figure out how to protect it before it before you buy it...

otherwise, I like Mark's link...

I look for peoples opinions, research a piece of kit and then see if I really need it. Don't see any problem in using a resource if it's there. Part of what Kate said mirrored your advice of body position, her concern with a gumsheild was swallowing or blocking your airway. Also she pointed out that most knocks to your face are due to your paddles or your hands rather than rocks.
Since you broke your teeth in the alps, where able to fly back and get them checked I thought you may have had an insurance policy on them or the vhi dental cover or something similar.
Jevon call it being short sigthed, I was more concerned in trying raise 21 grand than what to do afterwards.
Does anyone know about British mountaineers and their outdoor insurance?

BMC are cock suckers and didn't pay a penny for my teeth, they Felt front teeth are a cosmetic luxery.

noone will insure your teeth on a river.

Fake teeth are no more expensive to replace than real ones. I'm on my third set and they cost no more than the first set.

Just tuck up and your teeth'll be fine.

Saying just tuck up and your teeth will be fine along with I'm on my third set of teeth in the same post seems kinda contradictory Dave!

degenerated into the usual stuff

Of course you've never added an off-topic, vague or random reply to a thread, have you Kmck?

Would the gumshield prevent you from keeping the water out of your mouth/airway while capsized?  A full face looks like a good way to go, that Stormtrooper one is pretty deadly.

But none of my teeth came out when I was paddleing, I slipped on wet rocks, Got hit by a swinging rope, human cannonbell and bit a really hard cookie from tesco...

any of those things could happen any where.

I'm with dave here on it could happen anywhere that's why I'm never leaving my bed and drinking my food through a straw. I was actually amazed that I got such good info from people without alot of weird stuff, a hyperbaric chamber for my teeth?! John kelly was always at me to wear contacts when at club parties that way he could sneak up and attack me without worrying about my glasses. I think I'll wear the gumsheild while dancing with the club it's the only way I would safe. At the moment I have a clear retainer which is like a gum sheild and I would not be comfortable with it in my gob while paddling.

i cant see any way that you can guarantee that your teeth will 100% protected on or off the water . what you gotta do is look at things realisitcally. if you are going to be paddeling grade 4 then maybe it would be worth the investment, if you are going to be running the boyne, the liffey, the annamoe then a full face helmet and expensive dental insurance is probably a tid bit excessive.

also just because they cost you 21G to ge them doesnt mean that if you do knock one out it will cost the same to replace it. i would imagine that the 21G included the cost of extraction sx, xrays, mouldings and many other things that you wont have to under go to get a replacment.

Drinking food through a straw is not fun, I did for 3 weeks when i broke my jaw and by the end of it I was able to 'suck-start a leaf-blower', as Brian Cox kindly told me!! ;D

i used to play hockey right through school and i was pretty good at it too(yes slag me all you want), if a gum-shield can protect your teeth against a hockey ball then it should easily be able to protect you while on the water!! You can still shout and talk(muffled) while wearing one.

I wouldn't bother going for the full face protection, its far too excessive, considering you will probably not be running any high drops!!
All mouth guards are the same and do the same job, just make sure you tightly mould it to your teeth.

my $0.02,

rich

id have to agree with ritchie there, though i never danced like a fairy onto a hockey pitch. i dont think that  choking on a gumguard would be a problem either, kinda like swallowing your tongue, it dosent happen unless you take a knife to it. as well as that i dont see it falling out if you mold it properly.

Kieran, does your grrrrr face incline you to clench your teeth or to open your mouth and scream?

If the former, you'll never swallow a gum shield.

I too played hockey back in the day and i saw some pretty vicous facial injuries
but never damaged teeth when the person wore their gum shield. They are uncomfortable
and difficult to speak with but you just have to get used to them. As everyone else said if
it fits well it should be fine. anyway i know i dont paddle but dont you guys have river signals
so you dont have to speak on the river?
Title: Re: New teeth new problems
Post by: david on December 20, 2007, 14:07:34
There no river signal for "hold on a minute, I've left the  car keys at the put in" so you need to be able to speak a bit.
