Title: Jacket
Post by: Carla! on June 02, 2011, 12:21:43
Ok this isn't exactly kayaking, but I wanted to get a waterproof jacket and was looking for some advice.

Something good enough quality (well that I can afford) so it will last me a few years. And something I can wear in the rain and then even in the winter with a few thermals under and perhaps something breathable if I use it for sport or hiking. Any idea of what a good brand/place to look is? Or any general advice? And how much should I spend?

Thanks :-D

Carla

The camping stores/cheap outdoor at the end of henry street (Camden Street I think it is) do decent enough gear for much cheaper then gods and places like that.

Yeah, Rog is right, the street is Capel Street, Ramblers Way, Millets, the Military Surplus store are all down there.

Elverys in Dundrum are selling some decent looking Helly Hansen jackets for about €30, maybe €40. They look more like decent waterproof jackets than a heavy ski/winter jacket, but they look pretty good.

TK max or go into one of the bigger stores look around internet it. Other option is Jenny kilbride from outdor evolution is having a sale on her stuff so get in touch say your UCDCC she might do you a deal. I 've had a gortex jacket since thrid year and it's still going strong after two field seasons and four years of feild work so there is some quality gear out there.

I'd try where rog and ley-ley mentioned, i got a craghopper raincoat about three years ago in one of the outdoor shops at the top of henry street. I use it all the time, and it's still going strong. Also it wasn't too expensive, can't remember exactly but I know it was half price at the time.

Watch out for sales in Patagonian outlet store on Wicklow street. It's quite expensive but they do the odd 50% sale and such on occasions and the stuff is pretty dam good.

Look online - places like jackson-sports or field and trek can do sales of reasonably good jackets.

My uncle sells all that kind of gear. There's a huge selection and the prices are pretty good. Might be worth a look! :) I've gotten some stuff from him before and it is good quality stuff.
