Deadly buzz
As mentioned in a previous post, RSR2 training will be happening over the Summer.
It's a one day course and the provisional dates from June 9th, 10th and 16th.
- subject to change if the lovely instructor Cormac becomes unavailable.
The courses will have about 4-6 participants and I hope that there'll be of you lovely folks to fill two dates.
If you're interested but not sure that you're up for it ( or have any other questions) then just send me pm.
RSR2 teaches you all the skills you'll need for rescue on grade 2 water. It's exactly the kind of skill you'll be needing next year on river trips and any time you go on a river. It is now also a prerequisite for doing a Level4 assessment.
Syllabus here. (http://canoe.ie/en-gb/awardsqualifications/riversafetyamprescueawards.aspx#_Toc286834736)
There's a list of gear on the syllabus. I'm not expecting you to rush out and buy all that stuff (although that would be nice) so I'll find some nice people who'll let you borrow their gear ( the club doesn't own things like slings and crabs, it's the kind of stuff you get yourself).
So, if you're interested then post up when you'd like to do it. If you've got questions, ask them. Yo'

Sunday May 13th:

-
i'm away. you know how to pick your dates! earlier if possible!
-
I'd be interested in it, but it depends on the cost and my work situation. Won't be able to confirm any dates until closer to the time.
-
I'm pretty sure I can do any of those dates, but not the week after the 16th.
-
I'd be well up for this ! I could do any day provisionally but may be subject to change. I'd say my best bet would be the Sunday
-
Sounds delightful . . I think I can do any of those days.
-
up for it
just so people know, that freestyle training thing is in Toome on the 10th if anyone is thinking of going
-
just so people know, that freestyle training thing is in Toome on the 10th if anyone is thinking of going
In that case, my preferred date would be the 9th
-
I am in Denmark on the first two dates but the last date I will most definitely be up for!
-
-
I'm pretty sure all these dates suit me! Sign me up :)
-
Can I put a conditional for either saturday for now?
-
May I be on stand by for any date, so long as I'm not pushing out a college person to do it.
-
If you could stick me down for Saturday 9th, that would be great. :)
-
Beep-Beep-beep-da-beep! Update!
So, June 9th is off the table as a date BUT the course could run this Sunday (May 13th).
The other date will be June 16th - there should be two courses running.
If you want to do it this weekend then put your name down.
Priority given to those who won't be around for june 16th - also we'll need there to be some drivers.
so...
-
I can do this Sunday - can't drive though
Do you know what time we'd be done at ?
-
as said, i'm definitely up for it!
-
Looks like the 16th for me
-
I can do the 13th either
any of them
-
Check the syllabus phor a bit more inphormation.
Don't worry about the equipment you're supposed to have - I've got stuph scrounged phor you lot. You will have to be nice and give it all back thought.
I don't know the start time yet, I should know tomorrow.
It'll probably be either 10am in the boathouse or 10am at Sluice.
Any more quiestion, give me a buzz
-
buzzin for iiihhhh. how much is it do you know?

Hey Folks
Here's a little info from Cormac Lynch:
"The next RSR2 course will take place on Sunday 13th May at Sluice. We'll meet in Sluice carpark at 11.30. Everyone should bring as much of the rescue gear on the syllabus as they can, but in particular should wear plenty of thermals, as we will be in and out of the water a lot. This is a static trip, based at Sluice. Choice of boat is not particularly important, as we won't be going any long distance, however for part of the day we will be covering boat-based rescues, and so people should keep that in mind. People should also have lunch with them, which we can keep safely in a dry bag at our location. Hand-wipes or hand-sanitiser are a must.
Looking forward to seeing everyone."
>I suggest meeting at the boathouse at 10am. to get everyone and everything there in good time.
>As above, bring loads of warm things!
>Bring plenty of food, sweet snacks and maybe a flask of warm sweet drink.
>I'll scrounge the rescue gear for you and leave it in the boathouse.
>Diarmuid, Marie and possibly Cillian will be driving. I getting 4 boats on diarmuid's roof with 2 in Marie's and diarmuid's boot. I wouldn't rely on those roof-racks...
Have lots of fun guys,
I probably won't be at the boathouse on Sunday, but if you've got any questions then let me know.
Oh yeah, have another look at this (http://canoe.ie/en-gb/awardsqualifications/riversafetyamprescueawards.aspx#_Toc286834736)
-
Woooooooooooooooooooo! RSR2!
-
i'll be there, and i can give the roof racks a go anyway!
-
Oh god cillian...you weren't there, you don't know the horror.
Also it would be good to try and make sure that everyone had airbags.
-
sounds good
-
really good day, thanks a million niall! very very good of you to leave us all the gear. also, properly in love with your buoyancy aid!
-
Yes, well get your own! (http://www.i-canoe.com/Buoyancy+Aids%25252FPFDs/Rescue+PFDs/Astral+Green+Whitewater+Kayaking+Rescue+PFD.html)
Great to hear that you guys had a good time.
Are you all happy with how the day went, what you learned, did you all have enough/the right gear, was the instructor mean to you?
Was there anything that stood out as being particularly great/useful?
Did anyone take pictures?
OOH! and also a big thanks to Karen, Nuala, Bill and Maryanne phor generously letting their gear be used phor the day.
-
Yeh Niall thanks a million, we'd great fun :) Ill try answer the questions as best I can...
Phisrtly (lol) photos no...Very happy with how the day went, Cormac mean? sounds like you've never met the guy! He was lovely to us, very helpful, very open, never made us feel stupid when we (*cough* I ) let certain boats float down the river :)
Yup we all had the right gear thanks, everything went very smoothly and we learnt lots!
Useful things, we did quite a bit of throwing ropes and being rescued with ropes which is great cos I'd only been rescued with a throw rope once in a real life situation and I was a bit confused as to the smaller details (how to hold the rope in the water, which shoulder to put it over etc.)....Anyhoo by the end of the day rescues like that had become very routine which will be really helpful in future!
But yeh I really recommend everyone to go along who is thinking about it! :)
-
There was a bearded man in a trench coat taking pictures from the bank. I could try to track him down but to be honest I don't think the photo's would be up to much. He was obscured by the bush and only had one free hand.
-
Same story for this Saturday :)?
-
Have you contacted Cormac recently? His plans can change overtime.
Once again if there is space on this I kinda of need it to get my level four, since they've changed the rules again. Also I'm a driver
-
So whats the plan? Should we be getting the extra gear ourselves or is this already sorted? Just asking, so I know wether I should start begging :)
-
Oh, by the way, Ross said to say that he's driving and has space for two, three if it's completely necessary, more people and boats (he has no internet).
-
will ye take me off the list?
its a toss up between this or polo and im choosing polo... :D
if yeer still stuck for a lift then gimmie a shout, but i cant take boats....
-
but helena, isn't this on saturday?
-
yes...
and your point?
-
Polo is on Sunday and this course is on a Saturday so.... Unless you're super busy and can only take one day off on a weekend.
-
what kieran said
-
well i made the decision so ye wouldnt have gotten a say in it anyway, however due to the polo being cancelled i can infact do the rsr2....
are ye HAPPY now??
:P
-
thank you to whoever lent the blue astral green jacket pfd , was extremely comfortable ^-^
-
It's mine,
No problem at all. The Palm ones that the clubs have aren't the most comfortable...
-
Huge thanks to Niall for organising the day for us.
