Title: Ball Boater-X 2015
Post by: Peter O'Sullivan on February 12, 2015, 19:26:22
Hi Everyone,

With just over 3 weeks to go the count down to the ball is on! We will hopefully run a boaterX on the morning of the ball. Entry cost is 5euro per paddler. All funds go into a kitty which is spent, in its entirety on gargle to be handed back to you as prizes.

The Events are as follows:

(1) Fun BoaterX- Teams of three paddlers (1 Oldie, 1 college type and 1 fresher) race from the eddy at the top of the run in to Jacksons to below Jacksons. This race is against the clock and teams will have to stop for a group photo in the eddie before Jacksons. The time stops after two paddlers run Jacksons, ie. the weakest paddler doesn't have to run the drop.

(2) Sport BoaterX- Groups of 4 will race head to head (open to everyone with a level 3 cert). One from each heat will progress to the next round. Hope to have a banner to touch at the finish.

(3) Inflatable race- the jacksons rodeo/beat down is being replaced this year with an inflatable race. Details to follow.

Race brief at 10.00 in Lynhams carpark, first race at 10:30am and off the water by 14:30 to start getting some pre-drinks in. Steve is organising instructors. Fancy dress encouraged. Spectators can get to Jacksons on river left by walking down to Bollards bridge and walking back up through the forest.

I'll put a list of teams here as you sign up.

Does this assume binary gender? Because I don't identify with that.

Trans gender is allowed but only if they are roughly this standard

Want to be on my team Peter?

Sorry Diarmuid. Ross(in drag), Michael and I are on in team. Rumour has it Steve is going in drag too.

Can one of the committee update the first post to start the list of teams. Cheers.

Can everyone doing the individual races post up so I can do the draw. Plan is to have men and women race separately in the individual event.

Title: Re: Ball Boater-X 2015
Post by: Steven Mul on February 25, 2015, 18:10:19
Alex, the individual is heats of 3-5 people paddling the course in direct competition (no time, just first person down). I wouldn't be surprised if Peter puts a 'minimum level 3 standard' cap on this but I'm sure he'll let us know 😊

Title: Re: Ball Boater-X 2015
Post by: Peter O'Sullivan on February 28, 2015, 19:25:25
Given the shortage of oldies the oldie rule is being relaxed a little. You can be an oldie if this year is your 5th (or more ) year of college. So if you've taken the scenic route through college but not yet graduated you can still count as an oldie.
Title: Re: Ball Boater-X 2015
Post by: Peter O'Sullivan on February 28, 2015, 19:32:06
Any non-racer volunteers to help with the race, probably need two. One for timing and one for recoding results.

Does anyone need a particularly fresh fresher?
Though based on Peter's most recent definition I can also apparently be an oldie...... :P (I can barely kayak straight, that option is strongly not recommended)
Title: Re: Ball Boater-X 2015
Post by: Alex murray on February 28, 2015, 22:25:15
If it helps I'm a college type who can barely kayak in a straight line too. All you need is a one more who can't either and it would be a matching set  :P

Alex. Sarah> if i recall correctly Katie just about never kajaked (misspelling is intentional, i'll explain why if someone asks me in person) so she would be a good bet for a oldie to complete your set of can't go in a straight liners

Bad news. Going to have to call off the race due to the lack of water. Looking back in previous levels 2014 was 1.015m and 2013 was 0.872m. This year its going to be less than 0.74. 2013 was a low year and people were getting stuck everywhere on the way down, no point racing in lower water. The hoped for snow melt never arrived either.

As an alternative people are going cliff jumping into the pool below Jacksons. Meeting in Lynhams at 12.00. If you need wet suits etc from the boat house you can get them between 10.45 and 11.00 tomorrow morning.
