-
I'll do it

Aaaaand Cormac will be on the bank.
-
The bank below the chicken chute.
-
If I can be of any help I'm up for it :)
-
The bank below the chicken chute.
Near the carpark.
-
I'd be up for helping out :)
-
Would they also need volunteers on dry land to help with registration or timing or something that doesn't require rescue skills?
-
Kate, if you wanna do that try call/text Benny, he'd be grateful for the help I'm sure! O87 1213152 :)
-
I'll be home for that weekend, but I think I might be a spectator this year. This means I can throw stuff at the rescuers from the bank, wahey!
-
Feck it, put me down for rescue sure!
-

Yep! There's loads of stuff to do! I think Helena helped directing traffic in the carparks last year, there are probably other jobs too. If you want to ring Benny like Asho said I"m sure he'll have a job for you. You could see if anyone else signs up for extra help and maybe get a job together?
-
i think its actually a guy called bob is organising it but the icu/benny will surely give you a phon number for them.... if im doing nothing else i could do some sort of bank rescue, but put me down provisionally... :)
-
gwan then!

Update:
Due to the large sign up this post will now cover the rescue at:
Sluice
- bank based (1+)
* based on central island (requires paddling to get there)
* spotting approaching racers
* rope throwing
- water based (6+)
* boat barging
* towing swimmers to the bank
Sluice chicken chute
- bank based (2+)
* preventing collision with concrete wall (ie pushing boat noses out from bank)
* t-rescues from bank (ie turning people back upright, while standing in an eddy)
- water based (1+)
* boat barging
Leixlip Bridge
- water based (4-6)
* towing swimmers to the bank
* barging boats
Lines with "*" meant to provide a rough guide to expected activity

There tends to be a cohort of frogmen on chicken chute based on last year. They are quite effective, bar someone giving directions little else is required.
-
Can I go to sluice please!
-
Sluice for me too please
-
Dibs sluice!
-
sluicey goosey pour favour
-
I won't promise any rescue locations at this point, in case anything changes.
-
Just seeing this now, I'll be around to help out, wherever I'm I'm needed.
-
I'll do rescue, will need to borrow a club boat and get a lift. Don't really like Sluice. I can do the sweep to the end after as well if needed.
-
I'll do what I usually do best: wait for a picture that captures the spirit of Descent (almost certainly with my absence) and post it on facebook to convince other friends first there's a sports they probably havent tried and secondly any doubt over my popularity is not necessary. best luck

Sound, provisionally you could go at Leixlip bridge, that'd keep you away from sluice and put you in a better position for sweeping.
What sort of a boat are you thinking of? The club doesn't have much in the way of creekers, but there is a decent selection of old school longer boats that could make the sweep a bit smoother.
-
Damnit Peter! Go to Sluice, bring a playboat, you'll like it! I mean, it's certainly a unique feature, but after a while you'll warm to its stoic, spartan charms.
I''ll put my name down for rescue and doing the sweet.
-
Guessing beggars can't be choosers so I take some large tub, better for rescue and sweep. Its about 15km from Leixlip bridge to Island bridge, don't like the sound of that in a playboat. All depends really where I can get a lift too.

*Bump*

-
I''ll put my name down for rescue and doing the sweet.
I'm interpreting this as you want to do the sweep.
-
Silly me. Just realized I can't make it. My name shall have to be stricken from the record.
Is stricken a word?
-
Silly me. Just realized I can't make it. My name shall have to be stricken from the record.
Is stricken a word?
Yep, stricken is a word, the past participle of strike which can be used as an adjective.
eg "On hearing of Cormac's resignation Maryanne was stricken with grief"
-
Medium Please :)
-
Yep, stricken is a word,
Thank god. I thought I was loosing my grasp on the English language.
If anyone happens to stumble across a big unattended box of t-shirts my request for a medium still stands.
-
any chance ye wanna get me a m t-shirt even though i wont be doing rescue (but i will be helping!!!)

Yep absolutely, Leixlip bridge and sweep are both good to go! What size t-shirt do you take?
-
Whats Sweep ???
-
These lads/lassies do rescue at Leixlip bridge (first real obstacle after Leixlip dam), and then after the last competitor has passed, they run the whole way down to the end and make sure that there's noone left on the river
-
Sweep stays behind the last person in the race, so they do the whole course making sure nobody gets left behind or the likes.
Maybe they collect lost gear too and bring it to the next weir for lost property, I'm not sure.
-
Are the t-shirts as ugly as last year. They were horriblr :-\ :'(
-
Still wearin mine!
-
-
Cool stuff, looks like we have a kick-ass team this year. Woop woop!
-
Looks good, see y'all there!! :)
What time do we have to be on the water?
-
i can take the roofracks and 4 (just about!) boats and people, including myself. although with gear i wouldn't mind leaving it at 3.
-
See you guys there!
-
Did sweep a few years ago, don't forget to put your bung in, I was near the Garda club when I copped it. Conor Ryan Kindly dragged me from my boat at the end and got me food cause I was knackered!
-
What time is the race kickin off at?
-

-

Heya, I asked a few people for lifts but I can't seem to find anyone who is going to the boathouse before driving to sluice. If anyone is going to the boathouse and has room for one more (no boat), I would be much obliged.

Hey Kate, there should definitely be some free places, Gareth said he has two. Come to the boathouse and we'll sort you out anyway!
Marie you're welcome to jump in with me to save on fuel costs!
BOATHOUSE
Diarmuid and I will be the only people with keys to the boathouse tomorrow morning, if you arrive after we've left you won't be able to get gear.
You'll probably also have no way of getting there...basically, don't be late! I'll be there from 11ish.

Hey Gareth, yep, meet at the boathouse, bring roofracks, and you just need to fill out one of the online forms about gear.
-
Maryanne, that would be great. See you in the morning :)
-
I don't think Gareth is going to the boathouse, but it's okay, I've found another lift.
-
decided not to go myself because it will cost an extra person to rescue me, so that's a waste of resources. but enjoy anyways

loving the progression in photos 10 through 14 ^-^ nice job!
-
the group photos were taken while derv and i queued for hamburgers. and queued and queued.....
-
The t-shirts jammed into my hoodie pouch make me look preggers
-
Speaking of t-shirts, I have 2 or 3 leftover in the car, who didn't get one after the race?
-

Feel so ignored :P
-
You weren't ignored: we watched with fascination your incredibly slow progress. The hamburger queue was like a particularly dormant glacier.
-
I looked at the hamburger cue and then the mediterean and then the chille stand and went with chille. I thought the Hamburger was just more popular not just ridiculously slow!

Sweet Kieran - send it my way when you feel it's ready and I'll do my best to get it up !
