Would they also need volunteers on dry land to help with registration or timing or something that doesn't require rescue skills?

Yep! There's loads of stuff to do! I think Helena helped directing traffic in the carparks last year, there are probably other jobs too. If you want to ring Benny like Asho said I"m sure he'll have a job for you. You could see if anyone else signs up for extra help and maybe get a job together?

Update:

Due to the large sign up this post will now cover the rescue at:

Sluice
- bank based (1+)
* based on central island (requires paddling to get there)
* spotting approaching racers
* rope throwing
- water based (6+)
* boat barging
* towing swimmers to the bank

Sluice chicken chute
- bank based (2+)
* preventing collision with concrete wall (ie pushing boat noses out from bank)
* t-rescues from bank (ie turning people back upright, while standing in an eddy)
- water based (1+)
* boat barging

Leixlip Bridge
- water based (4-6)
* towing swimmers to the bank
* barging boats

Lines with "*" meant to provide a rough guide to expected activity

There tends to be a cohort of frogmen on chicken chute based on last year. They are quite effective, bar someone giving directions little else is required.

I'll do rescue, will need to borrow a club boat and get a lift. Don't really like Sluice. I can do the sweep to the end after as well if needed.

I'll do what I usually do best: wait for a picture that captures the spirit of Descent (almost certainly with my absence) and post it on facebook to convince other friends first there's a sports they probably havent tried and secondly any doubt over my popularity is not necessary. best luck

Sound, provisionally you could go at Leixlip bridge, that'd keep you away from sluice and put you in a better position for sweeping.
What sort of a boat are you thinking of? The club doesn't have much in the way of creekers, but there is a decent selection of old school longer boats that could make the sweep a bit smoother.

Damnit Peter! Go to Sluice, bring a playboat, you'll like it! I mean, it's certainly a unique feature, but after a while you'll warm to its stoic, spartan charms.

I''ll put my name down for rescue and doing the sweet.
Title: Re: Rescue for the Liffey Descent
Post by: Peter O'Sullivan on September 17, 2012, 09:48:30
Guessing beggars can't be choosers so I take some large tub, better for rescue and sweep. Its about 15km from Leixlip bridge to Island bridge, don't like the sound of that in a playboat. All depends really where I can get a lift too.

Is stricken a word?

Yep, stricken is a word, the past participle of strike which can be used as an adjective.
eg "On hearing of Cormac's resignation Maryanne was stricken with grief"

Thank god. I thought I was loosing my grasp on the English language.

If anyone happens to stumble across a big unattended box of t-shirts my request for a medium still stands.

These lads/lassies do rescue at Leixlip bridge (first real obstacle after Leixlip dam), and then after the last competitor has passed, they run the whole way down to the end and make sure that there's noone left on the river

Post by: Asho87 on September 25, 2012, 17:12:10
Sweep stays behind the last person in the race, so they do the whole course making sure nobody gets left behind or the likes.

Maybe they collect lost gear too and bring it to the next weir for lost property, I'm not sure.

Hey Kate, there should definitely be some free places, Gareth said he has two. Come to the boathouse and we'll sort you out anyway!

Marie you're welcome to jump in with me to save on fuel costs!

BOATHOUSE
Diarmuid and I will be the only people with keys to the boathouse tomorrow morning, if you arrive after we've left you won't be able to get gear.
You'll probably also have no way of getting there...basically, don't be late! I'll be there from 11ish.

I'm bringing my car to with roof rack if needed?. Are we meeting at the boathouse first and if so can i borrow a club boat to save me goin home to get mine ?

Hey Gareth, yep, meet at the boathouse, bring roofracks, and you just need to fill out one of the online forms about gear.
