Interesting you've chosen a man who has never been documented to have a full erection as your oldie. Good luck winning with him.....

You're best bet is to ask people directly. People are already having trouble getting freshers!

Not organising a team due to lack of boat.

If anyone wants a college type (can I be an oldie yet?) then ask me  :).

There's loads of club boats and I'm sure you could borrow one for the little run.

Andrew Jeffers, Marcus Ahern and myself.

After one was not provided last year I bought myself a trophy and presented it to myself in the bathroom mirror. If it could be presented to us in a more official fashion this year that would be great.

@Derv if you like you can borrow my boat for your run its the smallest size stomper so you should be fine in it if you like? so get a team going the more the merrier.

I hear that people are finding it hard to get freshers?

So we will allow last years freshers to count as your fresher for this year. This will be taken into account for the times on the day.

Also if you do use a non-fresher as your fresher they must wear some form of home-made nappy on the day for the race. (failing to do so will incur a time penalty)

the Organisers have spoken

I mentioned this to Simon as almost everyone I've spoken to so far said they were having trouble find a fresher. What I meant was REFRESHERS though. So only people who joined in semester 2 be counted as freshers.

Also Peter is definitely a college type

Yep, Peter is definitely not an oldie, he's a college type. As for Nicola, she's technically not a fresher although I'm sure because she wasn't in the club for a year it'd be grand :)

Just to stir the pot, but Zog is most definitely not considered a fresher. Not only has he got all his own gear, a L3 (well done by the way) but he has also been in the club for over a year. He must be stripped of his Fresher status pronto!

Title: Re: Fun BoaterX sign up
Post by: Zog on March 02, 2014, 15:41:31
Firstly, thanks Marie  ;) but I began paddling last year in the second semester, and as such am regarded as a refresher, it has been stated that refreshers can fill the fresher slot.  I don't see what the point is about my gear, I bought my own stuff so what? or my paddling ability, I'd like to remind everyone that Joey and Briain both competed in the fresher category last year and indeed Joey was part of the winning team. Both of these guys are most certainly better paddlerswas joey an instructor or trainee instructor at the time?  than me and there was definitely a wider gap in skill level and ability between them and the likes of my brother or Deividas.
Title: Re: Fun BoaterX sign up
Post by: Steven Mul on March 02, 2014, 15:53:42
But they were technically freshers. You did join before the official refreshers day which puts you into a limbo position between fresher and refresher. Personally I think having your own gear and having your level 3 doesn't make a difference in this scenario but I do think that because you competed last year (where a lot of other refreshers didn't) and because since then you have run Jacksons on private trips you should be counted as a college type.
Title: Re: Fun BoaterX sign up
Post by: MarieH on March 02, 2014, 15:54:30
A fresher is by definition someone who is in their first year with the club, regardless of paddling ability or stage of college they are at.

As stated by you last night, you first paddled with us in January 2013. It is now March 2014 so your golden days of being classed a fresher have well expired. It's time to move on to greener pastures.
Title: Re: Fun BoaterX sign up
Post by: Steven Mul on March 02, 2014, 15:55:45
...anyway you'll probably just end up swimming on the run in and ruining your teams chances so it probably wouldn't make a huge difference.

Let the trash talk begin!  evil.gif
Title: Re: Fun BoaterX sign up
Post by: Zog on March 02, 2014, 16:15:21
I joined in week 1 of the second semester not week 2 and as such gained 1 week more of experience...does that really equate to having a whole previous semester more experience over someone who joined a few days after me?

With regards to my experience of jacksons, I've run the actual falls once on a private trip.

As for "competing last year" I swam twice on the run in and didn't even run the falls. Ross has the video footage to prove this and Karen would probably rather forget it ever happened...

I am a refresher, refreshers can compete in the fresher category as already stated.

Steven, its on.

P.S. I have yet to be announced as being on any team, don't know what all the fuss is about? :D :D :D

You were a refresher!
Title: Re: Fun BoaterX sign up
Post by: kmck on March 02, 2014, 20:27:24
When did refresher come to mean someone who joined the club in the second semester? It was coined for people like Sara Hayden who joined the club, left the club and then was convinced to come back so that year they were called a refresher ie someone who was having another fresher year with the club.

First college year with the club is fresher even if that is only the second semester, no longer a fresher when the first fresher joins in September! Simples

For purposes of this competition Simon's decision is final since he's running the event.

With that kind of armchair moaning Dave you're looking for a fast track to grumpy oldie in no time

Just to be a dick here and throw another ingredient in the mix - last year Joey was not "technically" a Fresher - he had joined the Club the previous year but didn't come to a whole lot so was allowed to compete as a Fresher.

I don't care anymore but I have to say there's nothing like stirring shit and irritating people on internet forums over trivial things :) I'm just arguing within the confines of a set of parameters ;) and Kieran, I think the modern interpretation of a "refresher" is down to the titling of the open day in the second semester when all the clubs and societies set up stands as "refresher's day".

Hi Everyone,

Sign up closes at 17.00 on Thursday to give me time to organise the running order for saturday morning. I'm not taking any new sign ups on the day so get your teams in a.s.a.p.

If people are finding it tough getting the right people just do your best and if you can't get someone get anyone. We can take it into account on the day if you have three college types etc.

Also if it ends up that theres a team of two or one person left out just ask people already in a team to do a run with you and highlight when posting your team the people who are already signed up in an existing team.

This is a fun event so lets not turn in rule nazis

Simon

If you're comfortable in a boat stick with what makes you happy, hull speed isn't everything when you are negotiating rapids. Just make sure whatever boat you take is fit for purpose
