Title: Clifden summer 2014
Post by: Peter O'Sullivan on April 15, 2014, 14:46:49: I will be in Clifden a few times over the summer, planning to either camp or stay in the hostel depending on the tides and weather. For those who haven't been. Clifden hole is excellent. Here is a description http://wiki.iww.ie/index.php/Clifden_Hole (http://wiki.iww.ie/index.php/Clifden_Hole) Turn up two hours before a 4.4m high or higher tide. Paddle and repeat twice a day.

Get the tides from http://www.wtides.com/ (http://www.wtides.com/) Download and install. This will give you daylight hours as well. Aim to be in Clifden on days where you can paddle twice a day to get maximum benefit from the tides. Best place to camp is either the proper campsite, for 10euro a night

The hostel in town is alright if the weather is miserable.

There is a Gopro mount under the arch is gone. Clifden hole is suitable for all standards of paddlers. Swims are harmless.

Bring insect repellent.

Yep they can indeed :) Or you could go to GODs or I canoe and demo a really really nice boat for a weekend :)

Yes, the learning curve will be steep. But it will be steep for everyone so don't worry.

Post by: DervM on April 15, 2014, 22:05:01: When Peter says swims are harmless here he really means it! It just flushes into a massive lake yoke, and any current near the feature dissipates pretty much instantly.

Definitely worth going to :D.

Friday 27th of June 18:12 4.8m again on till Sunday

Friday 11th of July till the next Friday good to go except maybe the evening on Friday it might be too dark

Friday 25th of July looks good till Thursday of the next week the 31st

Friday the 1st of August 21:46 maybe too low to work on the Sunday only 4.1m tide

Friday the 8th 16:03 and will be working till Saturday 16th though the evening tide is after 22:00 so too dark

Friday the 22nd 16:33 4.3m tide working till the 30th

4.1m definitely too low.
4.3m too low, if I was in Clifden I would go look 1hr before high tide, definitely wouldn't drive across the country for it.
August 16th, sunset 21.01 and twilight ends 22.31 so you would probably be fine.

That program I linked gives sunsets and sunrises, take note romantic types. Its good for planning walks to watch the sun rise and set.

i.e. if high tide of 4.68 is at 05.12 and sunrise is at 05.08 would there be enough light? I get that's cray early but just trying to figure it out :)

Post by: Steven Mul on April 25, 2014, 16:35:23: Just went through the chart and look for any day where there were 2 high tides above 4.50m, so I have excluded some days where there was one below and one above 4.5m. This has midweek and weekends. If Peter could possibly look and these and comment on the feasibility of each day in terms of daylight that would be great. I'm just not sure how much light is need, how much time after sunrise you need high tide, etc. as I've never been there myself. I'm only available for midweek paddling over the summer so hopefully others are around too! Also Peter is the feature to big (trashy I think you said above?) once it gets above 5m?

Ages away I know, but just to say I'd be interested in going these days. I can only go for 2 of the days. Could make sunday evening only too. Should be able to drive and would have space for 3 people and 3 boats. If someone else was driving too that'd be cool!

Experience shows that the campsite in Clifden is very reasonable, showers and sheltered areas. We didn't book it last time but might check it online this time? There is also a hostel in town

My plan is to get the evening session on Friday, morning Saturday, evening sat and then head back Sunday having the option of checking it out for a quick spin Sunday morning.
I have my car and room for 2 people 4 boats although I might take 3 people if needs be.

Really sorry about the date mix up thought I could head earlier.

Then come back Sunday. I'm more interested in paddling than anything else so will be looking at the campsite in Clifden rather than anywhere else

So I am going to Clifden leaving Dublin at 12, probably from UCD since people will have their boats there
