Title: Clifden Summer 2016
Post by: Peter O'Sullivan on March 30, 2016, 09:44:42: I will be in Clifden a few times over the summer, planning to either camp or stay in the hostel depending on the tides and weather. For those who haven't been. Clifden hole is excellent. Here is a description http://wiki.iww.ie/index.php/Clifden_Hole Turn up two hours before a 4.5m high or higher tide. Paddle and repeat twice a day.

Get the tides from http://www.wtides.com/ Download and install. This will give you daylight hours as well. Aim to be in Clifden on days where you can paddle twice a day to get maximum benefit from the tides. Best place to camp is either the proper campsite, for 10euro a night

The hostel in town is alright if the weather is miserable.

Clifden hole is suitable for all standards of paddlers. Swims are harmless.

No one's looking to make a team for that though 😕 would probably leave it myself as we've got kilaloe and the open coming up and so would to be able to make it to at least a Clifden instead

I messaged Aran and Keyes. Aran thinks it will be grand.

Anyone up for going to Clifden this weekend. Leave Dublin around 16.00 for the Friday evening tide. Paddle Saturday morning and evening. The tides will be too low Sunday. I could try get the college van. Probably going to stay in the hostel or proper campsite.

Michael Nestor can't make it now. Jo, if I get the van I can give you a lift. Need three really to justify the cost and hassle of the van.

Post by: Peter O'Sullivan on August 07, 2016, 22:24:00: Good weekend in Clifden despite the terrible weather. Borrowed the red UCD Citroen Dispatch. Worked fairly well. The van can take 6 playboats comfortably, or 3 creekers. The van used 67.27 euro of fuel for the weekend, we drove 676km. We could have taken the vet school van with the fibreglass tanking but I opted for the slightly smaller Citroen.

I used to say Clifden worked from 4.5m tides and upwards but I'm not thinking that 4.4m tides would be good. The regular campsite now has fairly good wifi, fast enough to watch training videos between sessions.

Also the Aasleagh gauge is online http://waterlevel.ie/0000032060/0001/week/ (http://waterlevel.ie/0000032060/0001/week/) , guessing it needs to be 1.2m to run.

So ive been told by others :-\ . Only option though (for me anyway) This weekend is not the best, and is a bit soon, next is national sprint champs, one after is also pretty bad and then theres ep weekend, and finally last one is canoe polo open... Sooooooo :-\
