Title: Paddling on the 21st/22nd/23rd
Post by: kjt on December 12, 2007, 20:21:48
What a better way to celebrate your exams... Head down about 12 and go for a fun awl paddle.

I'm also thinking of heading out the sat or sun (OR BOTH). Possibly the Boyne as it's been a while.

Anybody interested?

P.s my cars full for the Friday 21st trip :)

just as a reminder and for those who did not know. it is club policy not to loan gear to anyone who does not have their level 3 proficiency. this is a long standing policy put in place for safety reasons.

no its not ok. it must be an organised club trip where we have agreed with the instructors before hand that they are instructing for UCD canoe club. Its not ok to go paddling with a friend who is an instructor and use club gear if you dont have your level 3. its really important that people realise this! paddling can be a dangerous sport if you dont know what you are doing and it is the clubs responsibilty to make sure that our gear is used safely, and thats why you have to have your level 3 before you borrow our gear to go without the club.

thats always been the way and it isnt a matter open to discussion, people will always complain but if you are serious enough about your paddling to complain, get your level 3! then you dont have to listen to the committee bitch at you when you want to yoink club gear(thats what i did!)

Christ, I cant believe I'm about to admit this BUT...i agree with dave

I was whisked off for loadsa private paddling trips last year and I imagine that it made a difference. Anyways I hear tons of people going on to freshers bout how great it was  in their first year when they got brought down Jacksons on their first, second, third whatever, river trip. If u look at the thread for the first trip we made to Wicklow this year you'll see the proof.
Freshers need to be encouraged with a bit more crazy, and shutting off club gear for said private trips is just slowing shit down. albeit i understand its a safety reason, but it's unreasonable to expect freshers to get near a level three yet, I mean we were complaing for a long time bout there not being any rain to get some decent paddling, so it's not even like they've had the chance.

Private trips are a really good way to learn. I got the chance to go on plenty when i was a boatless fresher but thats only cause there was always a key in the pipe beside the boathouse so nobody knew if you yoinked a few boats for a day.

Dont get pissed off with the commitee for enforcing the rules.... you just gotta find a way around them ;)

fo' real Committee... What's the Dilly?? Let us Live...  you don't hear about the leaders of the Badminton club check ing credentials before someone uses their Birdies... You don't have to pass any test to use the Athletics track...

Do you guys really want to be known as the oppressors in the most uptight club on campus?!?  Now, I'm not saying its gone that far, but am starting to hear whispers... the finger pointing has begun.  Even Trinity is laughing... It started with the cessation of drinking in the boathouse, then Tuesday drinking.  When was the last full scale Saturday house party??  Can we really let this pattern of conservatism spread to the rivers?!?!

Seriously though, when were Freshers ever offered a chance to get their level 3?? I've asked if I could do it on the past 3 river trips...
If it really is a serious problem, call it a club trip where we provide our own transport... (like Kerry) There is obviously the demand.  What better way to wind down after finals and prepare for Kerry (or Uganda)?

On that note...  What are the plans for post exam fiestas???

I know I'm not the only to have been dragged down Jacksons, caz was on the same trip. Nuala was brought down in the duo, pretty sure pia wasnt long after us an d Dee said it was her second river trip.  :P
Plus, I do believe it was the Captain (dave) and training officer (Mark) that dragged me.

i understand that the rule makes sense but everyone knows it has clearly been broken plenty of times last year, its not fair to make exceptions for a few people then not let others (male freshers) use club gear. at least not so blatently anyway.

the point is moot for the likes of Johnny and Jevon anyways, since it's only ever cute fresher girls that get dragged off on these early-year private wicklow trips.
Title: Re: Paddling on the 21st/22nd/23rd
Post by: Lucy on December 14, 2007, 11:21:45
Right, this is a case of shit circumstances where both sides have a good argument. Committee are right in saying that it's a safety reason and also I'm sure it must have something to do with preserving the equippment of the club aswell as the freshers' lives. Whilst on the other hand, its shit cause you're not gonna get anywhere fast in the sport without more opportunities.
As for taking freshers down Jacksons, it just seemed to be the most common example of 'above ability' trips...even though those that were dragged faired pretty darn well.
C'est la vie.

Anywho towel,I'm finished on Wednesday the 19th and am more than willing to party.

If taking the equipment out is just a matter of insurance, than how about you organise an additional policy for people who don't have a level 3 to take out stuff. All they have to do is pay a little more but they get to learn.

Jevon, I'm afraid Simon is probably right. If you look at the skill levels of people such as Kyle and Cian, who only just got their level threes, it's way ahead of ours. However, if you put in enough work in Uganda you could be there in a few weeks.. go Jevon!

Then again... no equipment, no learning...

Title: Re: Paddling on the 21st/22nd/23rd
Post by: kmck on December 14, 2007, 19:33:02
You have a code of practice. Safety is supposed to be a positive not a negative thing. There is a very good reason for having a level 3 cert for taking gear to run stuff. Basically if you could borrow gear without it, the person lending the gear to you would now be taking on the responsibilty of saying your able or not able for a river. In otherwords you hurt or god forbid drown on a trip the committee would be brought up and could be made liable for your death due to your stupidty of doing something you couldn't handle. A level 3 does not make you a better paddler, it does not make you able to judge water and it does not make you any wiser, it is however granted by the governing body for the sport in the country as such you are expected to be of a certain level to get it. Therefore the committee can use it; instead of having to make that particular judgement call. They are still responsible for your safety if you use club gear on a private trip, so give the guys a break. They will get you to level 3 as soon as is humanly possible and this is completely possible within a few club trips.
You do not learn when you are scared, as such you learn techniques on easier rivers or easier settings. The way some people carry on, you would think that we should teach people by giving them final year papers on the first day of college and expect them to pass. Learning doesn't work like that. Yes there are extreme exceptions to this rule but they are really rare.
Title: Re: Paddling on the 21st/22nd/23rd
Post by: Sick Boy on December 14, 2007, 19:44:13
another great way of learning is to actually listen to your insturctor when you are being taught a technique, be it a new or one that you think you already know. i had to be taught how to paddel forwards properly during my level 3. you never stop learning in this sport and you can always improve even the most basic of techniques.

Right Jonny, Quite that Jedi shit right now!!!!

Go up to paddlers on river trips and ask them to teach you something new or ask them a question about the sport.

Their egos will immeadiatly become so enlarged at the thought that you came up to them and not someone else that they will straight away start firing out advice and pointers.

do this often enough and people will remember you as the eager one and someone probably show an interest in you and teach you as much as they can.

Asking for a jedi master on an internet message board will only attract you a 42 yr old gay lover from the Kansas state star wars apperciation sociaty, He wont be able to teach you how to paddle but hee might ba a sensitive lover.

what is with you and videos that have a homoerotic undertone?

Asking for a jedi master on an internet message board will only attract you a 42 yr old gay lover from the Kansas state star wars apperciation sociaty, He wont be able to teach you how to paddle but hee might ba a sensitive lover.

i think it might be time to pass on the golden spoon simon.
