Title: Kerry 2013 - 2014
Post by: Diarmuid on December 02, 2013, 21:43:38
What's cracking lovely lads and ladies?

What is it? Mutha'fuckin New Years trip
When is it? 27 December - 3 January
Where is it? Glenbeigh, Co Kerry
Who should attend? Everyone, you'll seriously miss out if you don't!

So, we're into the month of Procrastination (December), it's getting close to that time of the year where we settle into our most expansive trousers after a heavy Chistmas's eating, ask the mammy to cut the leftover turkey into sambos (if you don't eat them, I will) and head away down the country. This all means that it's time to start planning yourself for the joint-best half-week of 2013 and 2014*! We'll be staying in the luxurious Clearwater Holiday Homes in the village of Glenbeigh, Co Kerry!

There'll be Kayaking every day (party every night), with daily trips to the Lower Caragh, Surf, Upper Caragh and further afield I'm sure. ;) As usual we will be hosting our yearly Table Quiz on the 30th at our (in)famous nightly venue, The Ross Inn who'll be putting on an even better New year's Party than last year!

Hi guys,

Just a quick reminder, anyone who wants to get gear out for Kerry, please organise to do so before Kerry itself. All committee members will be in Kerry for the full week (whoo) and will be unable to open the boathouse.

At minimum the boathouse will be open this Saturday 20th between 1200-1500 and also on the morning of the 27th.

If this does not suit you please just give myself or another committee member a text / call and we'll sort you out whenever :)

Merry Kerry,
D

The ridiculously cheap prices (including accomodation AND food) will be as follows:
1 Nights: €20
2 Nights: €35
3 Nights: €50
4 Nights: €60
5 Nights: €70
6 Nights: €80
7 Nights: Only €80!!

Money can be paid either in advance or down in Kerry, whichever suits really!

If you're driving down / looking for a lift please discuss that here (http://forum.ucdcanoeclub.com/index.php/topic,11721.0.html). The best way to be assured of a lift is to ring the person that you're asking :)

*the best week of the student year may have been a better way of writing this

NML Notes

Hey Guys!!! Aoife (your friendly NML) doing a sneaky edit here ;)

So all you Freshers (and EVERYONE ELSE) better be down at Kerry at some point this year!!!

This week is the best craic ever!!! As in you'll be planning your 14/15 Chrimbo hols to include Kerry before you even leave this year!!!  This week is also great for meeting ALL the kayakers from the different Uni's and Colleges from around Ireland and even some from the UK  ;D

For those of yous who are enjoying the social end of the club, this week is the week for you!!! While there will be Kayaking available everyday, there's no pressure to go! There'll always be a few people around just chilling/sleeping/getting ahead with the boozing for the next party...

For this trip there wont be any bus down!! But don't freak out!!!! Get on to the post for lifts to Kerry and nab yourself a lift down!!! Don't worry if you don't know the person who you're getting the lift with...you'll be besto's with them by the end of the week :D

For those of you who think you don't know enough people in the club to spend a week with us...I only knew the names of three people going down last year...I left with a few new best friends, seven nights of hilarious memories and a new found love of 'rock the boat'!!  afro.gif

This week is not one to miss!!!

Title: Re: Kerry 2013 - 2014
Post by: kmck on December 03, 2013, 14:47:38
Pick a day, and we can collect people from the train station. If more than one person is travelling by train on the same day either arrange to travel on the same train as train buddies or wait in Kilarney and everyone get a lift together. If you arrive early in Kilarney there are buses that go as far as kilorglin and even to glenbeigh.
Title: Re: Kerry 2013 - 2014
Post by: Peter O'Sullivan on December 03, 2013, 15:04:56
To add to what Kieran said. Arrange before you leave home who is collecting you and when. Someone called me last year from the train, don't be that person. There is a narrow time window between paddling finishing and beer O'Clock to get collected. Arriving in Kilarney or Kilorglin between 16.00 to 17.30 is a good time. No part of a plan in Kerry should rely on phone signal.

Me neither... I have a spraydeck and clothing incl. cag, so I guess with a BA (L), a helmet (some blue one fit me well, that's all I remember), some paddles and a GTX boat I should be sorted. Who can I trust with that?

Guys you need to ask someone specifically to get you sorted, and remind them closer to the time. Don't ask in general and hope for the best :)

Kerry top tips
Money, this is used to buy goods, there is an ATM in the local petrol station however this sometimes runs out of cash making trips to Kilorglan or Kilarney

Food and drink, fruit and snacks help prevent Kerry flu. Water is your friend, drink lots of it. If you're in a club house help cook and clean as much as possible.

Clothes, Hat, gloves and a rain jacket. Thermals as many as you can cause nothing makes wet gear easier to put on than dry thermals. A good pair of shoes or boots for walking as wet feet suck.

Don't forget to bring a towel

Sleeping bags, air mattress, pillow. You may not get a bed accept this and move on with your life.

Light and reflective jacket. Head torch or other light source for walking to and from the pub

Visit a pharmacy for tablets etc. stock up before you leave in boots etc. as it is usually cheaper

Phone, make sure you can charge it and get a few extra numbers. Committee numbers should already be on it

Buddy up, when walking to and from the pub, in the pub, the river and always make sure someone knows where you're going if you head off by yourself (try not to do this).

River trips, ask the night before to go on trips, you maybe told no but that's the worst that can be said to you. On club trips, time dependant try to run stuff again. Pick your own line on club trips

When getting lifts on non club trips or shopping trips, offer petrol money , depending on the person the answer maybe no but it saves the driver the hassle of chasing you for cash. Don't eat or drink in a car without asking first. No matter how messy the car don't leave your stuff behind. If you have a boat you should also have a strap.

How dodgy is dodgy, normal river paddling should not put huge strain on shoulders, surfing on the other hand or harder grade rivers might.

Well the action of pulling something towards me is painful. most other shoulder movements are fine. also cant look left (yes its weird).

Although by the end of the week it could be ok . . .
