Title: Les Alpes!
Post by: Karen on January 16, 2010, 18:17:18
It's time to get planning people! A few of us are putting together a rough summer plan, so who's interested?!?!?

So far,

When?
Everyone - 1st- 15th June
A week before and after level 4 paddlers might bum around for a while!

Who can come?
We'd love to say everyone, but sadly it's just not possible. Everyone who wants to come needs, by the time we leave, a confident roll and be able to run a grade 3 river happily. This means Annamoe-ish level. But don't worry if you haven't got that yet, we have time so don't be put off!

To keep it managable, we gotta limit numbers, so 12ish people max. That's 4 cars.

How will we get there?
Le ferry! Awesome craic last year, but it means driving.

Where would we be staying?
We would either be camping, or hopefully, renting a chalet! It would be as cheap as possile, we're all students/unemployed.

Find out more!
There's a talk on Wednesday, about our trip last year what we hope to do this time around!

Whoever is interested pop your name down here.

I'm up for it, depending on cash. One suggestion I would like to make though  (if there is not a big difference in price), is to stay in a challet instead of camping. I only stayed for 5 nights, so it wasn't too bad, but for a longer period i think i'd definately prefer to stay in a chalet, but then like i said if there's a massive difference in price, maybe not.

Actually (as i mentioned before we booked anything last year) the challet can work out cheaper, plus its far nicer if its raining.... only reason to camp is if you want to do multiple locations or have the option of moving.  :)

Post by: kjt on January 17, 2010, 18:33:23
Yup the Chalets worked out pretty similar if not cheaper as Jody said. + it ends up cheaper for food as you have a fridge(can store big pots of grub) and don't need to refill gas etc etc

Same! (Also I'll DEFINITELY have a car by then so IF i did go and we were driving and getting the ferry I could drive)

Handy thing about not being on the board for a while seems to be that people say what I wanna say so then I don't even need to bother saying it myself  :)

You have four months to get yourself up to level 3 standard. I will say I've been twice once was a massive trip with 44 people on it the other had five cars and about 18 of us. The big one was more fun off the water the smaller more fun on the water. I've no idea yet if I will be going but I know others in their first year have gone but you would really have to put in the hours now to get the most out of it or else have your car as tourists who may paddle. There is plenty to do if you don't get to paddle everyday, via ferrata, rafting, hiking and loads of other stuff.

I went out in my first year, some cool and devilishly good looking people were kind enough to deal with my ineptitude while over there. 'Twas fun...

While the L3 is a handy benchmark for people to aim for, it's definitely not the be all and end all - don't get too caught up paperchasing. Talk to the instructors leading your Saturday trips, let them know that your plan is to hit the French Alps this coming summer and ask for their advice and coaching tips.. Get a training plan, commit to it and track it i.e. set specific goals and timeframes you need to hit.

After that, get out loads and you'll do ok, it's a fun place I'd love to go back to.

Right, so whoever's interested in heading away this summer, it'd be good if we could all meet up and start to put together a more definite plan.

Does next Wednesday, the 3rd February, at 7 at the board suit people?

Quick note here kiddies - you do realise that the June Bank Holiday Monday falls on the 7th of june this year

ergo, visa vie, concurrently, contemporaneously, inextricably, harmoniously, coincidentally, collectively, combined, companionably (sorry i got a little carried away with how many big words could be used there - but why do so many start with a C??) that EASKEY will be occuring from friday the 4th of June untill monday the 7th of June............................................................................. YOU ARE ALL GOING TO MISS EASKEY IF YOU GO TO THE ALPS ON THE PRE STATED DATES - YOU CANNOT LEAVE UNTILL JUNE THE 8th!!!!!!!

you can thank me later!!

Missed Easkey the last two years, my life doesn't seem that empty because of it. I don't think you can call me kiddy either! I will be in dublin on the 3rd also, if I am going will more than likely be fly -drive. I cannot commit to this until the end of march.

Just to improve the hype, my first Alps with the club was the 44 strong one (46 at one stage I think). In 18 days I got around 35 different river trips done on nearly 20 different sections of different rivers. Amazing.

Easkey is unvariably one of my favourite weekends of the year. When I tell people over here of what it's like to party back home, I mostly refer to Easky.

Nice, we're in Italy at the moment and probably here till the 7th or 8th - levels are nice! Going to head to Slovenia for a few days and then onto France till the 22nd. France is supposidly trés grande so we're putting it off a bit, we may head back to Italy for a few days on the way back from Slovenia!
