Any chance we could get a club REC 3 (or ICU accepted equivalent) organized? A bunch of us did the course 3 years ago and all our certs are running out in January, so there should hopefully be enough people to put one together. (January is a good time when most people are still off after Christmas).
For those who don't know a REC3 is a first aid course that covers basic first aid, as well as first aid in a remote setting and is useful to everyone, but especially those who spend time in remote environments (like kayakers, mountaineers, mountainbikers).
So if you are interested, give us an idea of numbers:
Nuala
-
I'd be interested in doing that
Ross Kerrigan
-
I'd be interested. I think that those certs are good till 2013 not 2012?
-
we were on a course a year later kieran. but the difference might only be acouple of months, so ill check mine you know yourself it could be tough to get one you need it
-
You're right Dave plus nothing says you have to wait till you're about to run out ours was on the 26/3/2010.
-
i believe with the updated rules all basic first aid certs only last two years now. i'd be up for the course, mine expires soon!
-
Id love to do one if I can
-
yup id be up for it....
-
Ye I'd be up for it - depends on dates though
-
So long as I'm in the country, and its on a weekend, I'm a definite.
-
Sure, depending on dates and price and such
-
Defiantly!
-
I'd be quite interested all right. Do you have to have basic first aid done already for this one?
-
No need for a basic first aid course, it does it all from the basics.
Note: If what you want is just a basic first aid course this is quite an expensive way to do it, it is a three day thing and works out as 160 to 180 euro unless the club sponsors it (which they may decide to do depending on their grant but don't bank on it). It's a really great course if you spend a lot of time doing sports like kayaking but if you are short of cash and not really sure you want to be running anything pushy you could find cheaper basic first aid courses.
Also if you want an AED cert this does not give you one (remote emergencies tend not to have AED's on site).
But if you do want to do it - great!
-
That said it's a fantastic course teaching you lots of handy skills and give you much more confidences in difficult situations on rivers, mountains, where ever.
I wouldn't sell it short, but can be pricey, so yes, some sort of club involvement would be great :)
-
Ours had the AED as an optional extra
-

Yes - not meaning to persuade people off it, just making sure you know what it is.
-
Also I know it's really confusing but there are two different awarding bodies called REC one is Remote Emergency Care which is what myself, Nuala etc did three years ago with Joe O'Gorman and the other is Rescue Emergency Care which I did a few weeks ago with Barry Redmond and includes an AED cert. Both are recognized by the ICU for instructor qualifications but only one (I think rescue) is recognized outside of Ireland. Head wrecking I know.
There is also a REC 2 which is a bit shorter and cheaper but still very comprehensive and I'd recommend this to anyone who wants a first aid but doesn't see themselves becoming a L3 instructor in the next three years.
-
Huh, I didn't know there were two different, which is recognised outside our little island? The one we did?
-
Rescue Emergency Care (REC) is a well known and respected first aid training organisation founded in the mid 1980s by Dr Robert Phillips while working in remote healthcare and adventure rescue services. I think the rescue one is international as well
Reading the remote one is also accredited by the royal college of surgeons scotland. One to check out.
Wilderness first responder.
Then there is the WEMT and then wilderness physician.
It might be worth talking to Micheal O Donell to just do a basic CPR course for everyone in college.
-
I'd be interested in doing this, do you know when it would be on ?
-
interesting.
Anyhoo, I'd be up for either expanding the qualifications i already have (REC3 remote emergency care), or just keeping it in dates, whichever.
-
Right, my qualification runs out in a month or so, so i was going to get on this.
Is there anyone still genuinely interested?
-
Genuinely interested, will need to scrounge for money.
-
i'm in!
-
Yes, on the condition that I can pull the money out of my ass!
-
I'm in, how much is it?
-
Definitely interested.
-
ye definitly depending on dates etc...
-
Definitely interested, mine runs out right about now.
-
Money Dependent I'd be up for it
-
-
definitely sounds worthwhile doing!
-
Don't forget me!
-
Yeah, I'm up for it, but I can't do 10-12th or 24-26th of February
and 17th-19th of February is Varsities.
So I may not make the cut due to timetable awkwardness...
-
So currently;
Karen
Nuala
Finch
Matt
Jean Kelly
Ross K
Garbhan
Killian T
Derv
Maryanne (not 10-12th, 17-19th, 24-26th)
Bill
Which is 11
-
If its possible, a date where none/ very few of us are playing polo would be great? :)
-
Yep your gona possibly have to watch the polo timetable..... from what i gather most of the matches are on friday evenings....
-
I assume people from both teams are represented here then? It might also be possible to miss a match though, as there should be loads of subs.
-
Polo: it's one week, you can miss one week easily and anyway polo is in the evenings this is normally a day course.
I'll be free any weekend. Preferably not varsities, the Wacko or the ball but I assume that's the same for everyone (and I can miss the Wacko if I have to). We could see if any of the DCU or Trinity guys are interested to boost numbers.
-
I'm interested in doing it.
Did we ever establish if it's the one that's internationally recognised or not?
It shouldn't clash with polo, as Nuala said, polo is on in the evenings. Even if that weren't the case, polo is only on once a month and should be easy to accommodate, it's silly to discourage people from doing something before they've even started it.
How about using Doodle (http://www.doodle.com/main2.html) ? We can get everyone to plug in their details and see what comes oph it.
-
money and date depending ill consider it, (dont count on me doing it though.....)

:)
-
-
Helena, unfortunately the course is limited to 12, but if someone drops out, or you use some form or whiles to get someone to give you their place....
Sorry about that, but if a place opens up you're first on the list! Watch this space and such

do we even need a first aid course after this?
-
How are people's schedules for Friday? The instructor is pretty keen to make this a whole day thing Friday too, but I can try and talk to him to make it the afternoon evening.
Also, try to have your deposits to Derv by Tuesday and if you can't make it please let me know as there are some others who would be interested in the course.
-
My lectures finish at 3 that Friday... :o
-
If anyone did not get the PM I sent please let me know :)
-
Who did you get to do this, may want a new first aid kit. If it's the same company as we had last time they've a nice one.
-
I'm also in lectures until 3 that day.
-
Finished at 3 on Friday
-
I know I'm late to post but Killian T said that he wasn't going to be able to do it, so was wondering could I take his spot and what stuff I need to do before taking part?
-
How adverse would people be to missing a few lectures Friday.
The course has to be 24 hours and the rooms available are just not open long enough on the weekend unless we stay until 11 on the Friday, which I'm not sure is an option for Pat, and would mean missing polo for sure!
So, it's only one day, any really really strong objections?
-
Ok, I can miss my 2pm lecture but I really can't miss a practical which finish's at 1.
And the polo situation is that the brownbears don't have a match that Friday but the cringecats do at 10:30pm.
-
Ye can miss if I hav too.... only hav lectures nd one tutorial
-
I'd really rather not miss a lecture unless I absolutely have to. But I also have practicals until one. I figured I'd miss polo anyway, because it's a very late single match after the course.
-
If I skip my 2 o'clock I'm finished at 11 o'clock
-
i have a 2-4 that id rather not miss coz ill miss it for varsities and you have to sign in (and i need it for pwe next year....)
-
Right, here's the dealio,
The course has to be 24 hours. the sports centre (the only building on campus open on Sunday) is only open 10-5.30 on weekends. Which is 15 hours, so we actually need to get 9 hours in on Friday. So I think we will have to start at 9am and go until 6pm (or if we start at 11am-8pm)
Unless anyone has any other ideas about a location I think we have pretty much no other choices.
-
(You might be better off calling it 14 hours over the weekend to allow for a lunch break, but if we are that tight for time I'm sure we'll manage)
If you have practicals you have to get to see if there are other weeks/times you can swap into - lecturers will frequently make allowances if you have a good reason.
I'll see if there is anywhere else around that we might be able to use, but as it stands we have a time, place and instructor all booked.
-
They probably won't like making allowances for us twice in the next 4 weeks though. What with varsities coming up.
-
Unless you are on the varsities polo team you won't need to reschedule anything - the bus normally leaves around five or six, polo team goes early. So if everyone wants to do polo for varsities, that's grand, we'll be having a look for somewhere more flexible on times anyway. But we might not find anywhere.
-
I will do everything to see if I can change my practical time as I can't miss it as it counts for my final grade. I will get back to you before 4pm tomorrow. If i am able to re seclude it I can start at 11am like you have suggested.
-
-
-
Contact the safety office, they can be helpful in booking courses like this.
-
I'm willing to skip my lectures on Friday and start the course at 9am
-
Hi, Ger, unless someone drops out there is unfortunately no space, it's limited to 12.
-
Hi, Ger, unless someone drops out there is unfortunately no space, it's limited to 12.
dangnabbit. Well the venue is still available either way.
-
Right so I got my Practical moved so I'm grand to start at 11am on Friday ;D ;D
-
Sorry!
Is there an outside bit attached/near the scout den?
-
there's a small concreted yard out the front and the back, we've had a REC 2 course there before with similar numbers.
-G
-
Is ther official venue and times for the course sorted yet?? im practically free on fridays now btw due to a little time table reshuffle
-
Yeah, sorry, that's all sorted. It will run from 3pm on Friday in the sports centre until an unspecified time as of yet, bring snacks!
For Saturday and Sunday it will run from 8am until 5.30.
Make sure to bring raincoats and rain pants. The weather is looking to be wet and a bit cold, so wrap up warm as we will be outside for part of this. And bring a good lunch! (I feel like someone's mother.... nag nag nag)
Any questions let me know.
I will inform out how much this will cost for certain as soon as I hear from our lovely treasurer :)
-
One place has openeed up on this if anyone is interested, knows someone is interested! (Also if it isn't filled we still hgave to pay the full cost... :() So ask everyone you meet!!!
-
Bring notepads!!! And pencils!!! (Or pens)
And rain pants and raincoats and warm shoes! And hats and gloves and scarves.
And anyone who is free meet me and Bill at the boathouse at 2 to bring over some kit (paddles and such)
And if anyone has found anyone to fill the extra place please let me know please
-
We have a person! Never mind.
-
Also, if you have a first aid kit bring it along for the craic
But, he will supply all the necessary equipment, so no worries, it's purely for talking about and such
-
Some photos are up on facebook (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151256394915343.811766.558130342&type=3).
If someone could write up a small post I'll email you on the originals if you want to post up on the blog. Ross, are you going to do this or would someone else mind giving it a bash?
-
I won't be able to start it until next week, but I'm happy to do it
-
I have the certs in college today for anyone who's around. Text me, I'll be in the library in an hour's time.
