Title: Ladies freestyle training (25th November)
Post by: Maryanne on October 24, 2012, 02:15:23
Hey ladies!

I just saw that Laura Griffin is organising a ladies' freestyle training day at sluice on the 25th of November, which is a Sunday and as such doesn't clash with the club trips, also isn't the Lahinch weekend, and is still a while before exams, so really, it's perfect!

It's a great opportunity to experience a different discipline and knowing Laura the atmosphere is bound to be friendly and enthusiastic with everyone cheering each other on!

She says the session is open to all levels, so anybody who's interested, post up here!
If we could fill up a few cars and send them out, that'd be great 8)
Represent UCD, get some sneaky tips for varsities, have some fun, meet some kayakers from outside UCD...good stuff all round!

"But I'm a fresher..."
In the past this sort of post might have come with a sort of disclaimer to the effect of "if you're a fresher you might not be able to go", but things are a bit different this year with the new pool and all the people who are around to help, so I'm going to go with:

It's a month away, so there are 13.5 pool hours and 15-20 club trips hours between now and then which is loads of time to build up some skills that will make the day a lot of fun. Post up, let us know you're interested and it'll be a cool goal for some learning :)

That'll be stuff like:
- being comfortable capsizing
- chilling out while capsized (waiting for a t-rescue if needs be)
- staying relaxed and keeping your balance
- brace and support strokes
...and if you've got that lot down, we might even try some rolling!

PS: freestyle kayaking is a discipline open to guyakers also, so all those tips are good to go for the lads as well! This particular day is aimed at ladies, but the skills listed above are something everybody should be working on; lad/lady, river runner/freestyler, fresher/2nd year/other

PPS: What's freestyle?
Here's a blurb about it on our website (http://ucdcanoeclub.com/disciplines.html) (scroll down a little)
Here's a thread about it on our forum "Freestyle / play boating" (http://forum.ucdcanoeclub.com/index.php/topic,10896.new.html#new) (it's new so it's not huge yet)
Here's a video featuring Emily Jackson (she's in the pink boat) and her family doing some freestlye on a feature called "Garb" on the Ottowa river (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5EN-zuNP5k) this isn't really beginner freestyle, but it looks cool and the soundtrack is a remix of "Óró mo bháidín" which I found quite hilarious.

G'wan Helena, by then you'll even have been back out on a river and we'll have recaptured you as the river-scum that you are!

Are we signing up clubways or do we need to individually sign up on their site?
