Craic lads!
I've been in contact with a few people about running an INTRODUCTION to SLALOM session for the club.
This will almost definitely be held on a SUNDAY so if you work weekends you may need to book it off! It'll be held at Wild Water Kayak Club too which is on the Liffey!
The cost should be no more than €20 (which is pretty cheap) although this is to be confirmed!
It'll be run in groups of 8-10 people so spaces are limited although if demand is high enough we can run 2 separate sessions! The session will cater for everyone from beginners to more advanced paddlers.
If you could please comment your name and availability below if you are interested we can get cracking on organising it!
For those of you wondering what slalom kayaking is Wikipedia says 'it is a competitive sport where the aim is to navigate a decked canoe or kayak through a course of hanging gates on river rapids in the fastest time possible.' It's really good for improving your boat skills! Oh and it's also an Olympic Sport.
Here's a quick video of an Irish slalom paddler; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuHeKqagq0o

Wow. that looks awesome! Could such an an intro session be arranged again later in the year, when us freshers have better control of what we are doing? I would looove to try it out.
-
Aooooife, slalom is an awful lot of shoulder work ???.

Hey Pia! Yes I'd hope to possibly run a 2nd of of these sessions near the end of the semester when freshers have a better grasp of the basics!
-
I'll definitely be interested in helping out depending on when it's scheduled!
Can I ask who's running the day? €20 is the cost most athletes pay when we go to squad weekends so it's good value for anyone starting out! :)
-
I've been talking to Doc Martin from WWKC. It'd be great to have you there!

We don't want your kind Conlan....
-
Any chance I could sign up to do this as well? I'd help make up numbers and bring down the cost :D ;D
-
I'm interested :)
I'm afraid I'll be at the mercy of how much college work I have whenever it's scheduled. I'll register interest for now to keep in the loop though.
-
I'm up for anything but I'm the same as Pia-kinda need to get the basics learnt first...

For anyone that's interested there is a flat water slalom race happening on the royal canal between carton house and leixlip. Open practice from 9:30-10:30 with U10's starting at 10:30. The adult race is scheduled to start around 1:30pm. There should be some slalom boats available to use but advisable to bring some club boats top just in case!

Any update on the slalom intro day guys? Really keen to get zipping between those poles!
-
Ha Dave is that because you saw me at UCD on Tuesday ;)
For those that would be interested there is slalom training at WWKC located on Strawberry Beds (Between Lucan and Chaplizod), every Wednesday at 7pm and on Saturdays at 10am. This is for all paddlers abilities ranging from children to Irish team athletes so don't be afraid to come on down! There are a range of WWKC boats available also, but are on a first come, first served basis for each session. You don't have to be a member of WWKC to attend, but please respect our club house and rules.
If interested you can contact me on 0861661829 or aislingconlan@gmail.com
Colm Ryan runs the beginners sessions at WWKC, so you can also contact him on 086 602 6052

Craic lads!
Just wondering if there are any Sundays between now and the end of week 12 that people would NOT be available to attend this day? In the planning process and want to confirm numbers for certain days before I book anything!
Cheers!
-
Lahinch weekend! other than that I'm good
-
Same unless something crazy turns up
-
Unfortunately I can't fully commit to anything in full just yet - with all the days I have booked off for trips I would have to wait until I knew my roster before I committed to anything in full :(
-
9th is a layday's slalom day with Hannah Craig. So both myself, and Wildwater KC, should be unavailable.
24th is my provisional l4 assessment.
... So unless it was this weekend :P.
-
Lahinch and 14th Dec I'm Busy
-
This weekend and Lehinch I can't do but other than that I should be free. Thanks for this Steve :)
-
November is going to be quite busy for me, I've a phone simulation, research project and interim report due.
Go ahead and plan for the rest, and if I can I'll go :)
-
Lahinch really, but I it all depends on the workload I have at the time, and if I'm allowed kayak :P
-
and if I'm allowed kayak :P
Which is the real question seeing as he can't go two weeks with out seriously injuring himself! :P
-
I have team training on Dec 8th and will be very hungover on Nov 24th after my 21st, but will still be able to kayak!!
