Title: HAVE A VERY MERRY KERRY!!!!!
Post by: Aoife S on November 30, 2014, 16:22:59
WOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

It’s that time of year again everyone! MERRY KERRY!!!

So for anyone who is a Kerry veteran at this point here’s a quick rundown:

As per usual we have the houses booked from the 27th of December to the 3rd of January!

Prices for the two club houses are as follows:

7 Nights: €80
6 Nights: €80
5 Nights: €70
4 Nights: €60
3 Nights: €50
2 Nights: €35
1 Nights: €20

The price as usual includes your dinner and breakfast stuffs!

For anyone who is a Kerry Virgin, here’s what’s happening:

Kerry is a week in kayaking paradise!!!!

The club heads to the quiet town of Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry for a not so quiet week of paddling, partying and the best New Years of your life!!!

We all head down in CARS!!! (Follow the link here to arrange lifts:    http://forum.ucdcanoeclub.com/index.php/topic,12079.0.html  ) You may end up in a car with people who you’ve never met before in your life, but what better way to make friends???  People arrive and leave at anytime during the week but the best craic is ensured from a full week spent in the Merry Kerry!!!

While down there we will stay between two Club Houses in the lovely Clearwater Holiday Homes.  There will be many other University college clubs in the vicinity also!!! These range from our posh neighbours in Trinity to our not so close neighbours from the UK! :D

There is paddling happening every day! These will generally be run as private trips, so if you are going paddling with club gear, you must let Ross plus either Steve, Andy or Dave know that you are going and you must fill out a gear borrowing form!  (This is just UCDCC policy that we have to do no matter if you’re in Dublin paddling in a puddle or off paddling a 200 foot waterfall somewhere  :P).  Some rivers may not be suitable for your level of paddling skill or some groups may not be comfortable enough to take a weaker paddler with them, so do not be insulted if a group says say you cannot join them…they’re doing it purely from a safety point of view! Everyone will want to get everyone out on a river as much as humanly possible!!!!

What to bring???

- Clothes (obviously…) and GOOD WALKING SHOES (There will always be impromptu hikes and the such, the pub is also a nice walk
-LOADS OF THERMALS!!!!! There are washing machines but very little drying capacity so bring as many thermals as you can fit in your bag!
-Sleeping bag and pillow (You are not guaranteed a bed, so if you appreciate staying warm and cosy at night, a sleeping bag and pillow may be required! :P if you have a ground mat too…more the merrier!!!)
-Money (We’ll cover the dinner and breakfast but you’ll have to supply your own alcohol and if you want snacks too!  You’ll also have to cover petrol costs for the drivers too!)  Try to bring cash because the pub doesn’t accept card, neither do the drivers and the ATM is a car drive away in Killorglan!
-Luminous Jackets (It's a dark walk on the road to the pub, we'll have a few we bring down every year, but the more the better.)
-Snacks! (These are handy to bribe people into letting you squish into the already packed bed, bringing you for a breakfast roll when you can’t stay vertical, and many other briberies :D)

LIFTS: http://forum.ucdcanoeclub.com/index.php/topic,12079.0.html

The official UCDCC Pub Quiz will be held in Ashes Pub this year on the 30th - followed by the New Year's Eve party the next night - woop woop  afro.gif

So…who’s coming??? :D

Serious question: will the same pub be operational?  ???

Doesn't the garage do cashback ? :D

the big shop (which has a petrol station if thats what dave is on about) does do cashback. but that only gives us 1 easy way of getting money, so might as well have a supply, incase something were to interfere with that means.

Bring a waterproof jacket if you have one, nothing worse than turning up at the pub wetter than the birds you're trying to impress with your tales of previous expeditionary paddles on the liffey and boyne..

Hey, was just sent this video, via the club account, from Glenbeigh's Tourism co-ordinator, of some of us at New Year's Skinny Dipping back in 2012. Ye can't see anything - thank God...but you can hear a good bit of yelling..pretty sure ye can hear various people yelling e.g. Cillian at 0:22 seconds. Bit of a laugh anyways :laugh:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Jwn1sX9juc&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Jwn1sX9juc&feature=youtu.be)

Head torch! While the walk from the pub is not very long it does get dark. And remember how to walk on country roads sometimes facing oncoming traffic is actually more dangerous than walking on the "wrong" side of the road

I find it very ironic that the words "luminous jacket" were the hardest to read... :P

don't forget warm clothes for chillin out in the houses and on river banks as well as whatever makes you happiest when you're hungover... it's the little things... :D

On the subject of money, its worth your while to offer or ask the person driving you to and from the river(s) a few euro toward petrol - depending on what you're paddling it can be a bit of a drive!

Oh, also if you have straps that could be used for tying down boats to roofbars, their very handy! Drivers will likely have some, but you can never have too many straps!

Ask someone other than Ross about how to tie boats also ;)

If a driver, double check that people tied on their boats correctly...

In fact, anyone travelling in a car really should just check before they go that the boats and racks are secure.

Check you car is serviced..brake fluid, coolant, oil, tread depth and particularly tyre pressure...if you're taking a few people with heavy bags and a few boats you could easily have over 150kg extra in the car, the manual or inside of the fuel cap has a chart with recommended pressures for given loads, you'll have more grip and greater fuel economy!

Hey guys, if I was looking to use club equipment, who would I contact/ when should I be at the boathouse to pack?

If not, I'll just blow up some bin bags and float down the rivers.

I'm packing 16 or so club boats with gear, I will try get a good mix of gear in terms of sizing, there is no need to be at the boat pack.
