Ok, those shitheads on the committee (*dammit Mark!!*) have put me in charge of organising the team for the long distance. Apparently because my current boyfriend USED to be a racer (long before i even knew him!) that makes me the most qualified person for the job.
Sign up here if you are interested
I did it last year and kicked Finn's ass
Yeah, that's right
Quick as a cat.....me...
-
??? ???
-
I'll go for it.
-
If people are serious about this thy should be at the front of the line-up at the start. This leaves room for people who aren't serious about it to paddle sideways across all the other contestants.

Or swim!! Its in the rules that competitors have to help swimmers ;D

Pick me pick me pick me pick me
I will be there with bells on or will be shouted onto the river again so rather miserable. (Some rather stupid rule about it being a canoe club and thus having to canoe.)
But come join me we can have a nice chat.
-
I might be interested... when is this whole varsities thing??
-
me and riona might, but if theres limited places dont let us stop anyone else ;) x
-
I'll give it a go and try beat my current record of 95th place!!
Varsities is weekend of 22nd-24th Feb, in Limerick
-
i'd like to give it a go but is it wise to do it in a jackson fun?
-
Its always wise to do things in a jackson fun.
I'm liking the enthusiasm guys. I would recommend competing in something cos you'll feel good for having done something more that weekend other than drinking
Ok, so far we got
Jevon
Assho
Riona
Cli
caz
Jevon, varsities is an annual kayaking competition with other colleges around Ireland where you compete in different events such as whitewater, polo, freestyle etc...
Normally, we wouldn't give a shit about winning but this year the winner gets the Dee Cup and since Dee's our friend we wanna win it.
SO YOU BETTER NOT FUCK UP!!!
(No pressure.....)
-
does this count as a club trip? cause you know, I haven't managed to get my level 3 yet...
yeah, and on that note, I might need to borrow a boat for the next few weeks for training, I was thinkin some laps around the pond...?
how long is the paddle? - (and I don't mean blades)
-
i am not a definate entry... i dont really think i want to do it, dont like this whole idea of having to earn my right to have fun, it's going to be bad enough im giving up broccoli (heh) for lent, on top of that padlling miles of flat water first thing on a freezing cold february morning. probably with a hangover. is pure masochism.
im going to stop talking now, still a bit drunk from last night. :-X ciao
-
this year the winner gets the Dee Cup
Is that the case in just long distance or is it all the events?
-
isn't the dee cup for the winner of the white water???
stop trying to con people into doing long distance ;)
-
The Dee Cup is technically for the winners of the white water but i'm just trying to give everyone the once in a lifetime chance of paddling a beautifully long stretch of really flat water. There's nothing quite like the feeling of your muscles seizing up as you fight to get across the finish line
No seriously, its actually fun and if you can't compete in the other things you may aswell do this as it'll get you involved. Don't listel to the "boobs Officer"-she's gonna be a drunken mess all weekend. You may hear her ranting about some sort of towel and see her scoring locals
Ooooh, in your FACE Ali!!!
-
yeh whatever, in first year dee FORCED me to turn around half way during the long distance and go back to the start cause it was so much effort ;) :D
-

Which if you look at the course map would be a really useful strategy.
-
ah she was ahead of her time was d. ;)
-
you know the way the mind plays tricks on you and after awhile even the worst experience fades into a fuzzy, warm, it wasn't all that bad feeling. Well I did this river over a decade ago and I still wake up screaming!
Now, there are many here that might take the view that I am been defeatist so if you do decide to do this race paddle a k1 or at least something long and fast. Do not under any circumstances think of paddling your creek / play boat unless you
a: don't like your arms / shoulders; and or
b: like pain.
On an altogether more serious note it would be good to win the varsities to demonstrate to NUI Galway that you can have fun and paddle. So those of you who are up to it should do it and thereby demonstrate Pia’s ability to develop and project a vision of what winning / participating in this event will do for you and your career and, having harnessed your energy and enthusiasm, lead you all to what is sure to be a glorious future. Alternatively you could also pull a move similar to Cork a few years back and change the rules to ensure the Galway get into a strop and refuse to ‘compete’.
-
Nice thought dave.
-
i am not a definate entry... i dont really think i want to do it, dont like this whole idea of having to earn my right to have fun,
That is the weirdest notion I have ever heard.
-
em...not really..
-
the club will be bringing down some of our faster boats for the longdistance so you wont have to use your fun caz. jevon this will be a club trip and as such any competetors will be allowed to use club gear.
-
I'll prob give this a go!! ;D
-
How long is the course and is it on WW?
-
i think the gp course is 4k and the fibreglass/ eliete class is 8k im not sure thouogh? do you want to come back as our ringer again?
-
Sure , sounsds like fun :)
-
sweet paddy is doing it were sorted, as long as he uses a proper boat we'll win!!
wohoo....
MEDIC MEDIC...
hope you've been training cause im heavyer then i was last year! ha!
-
No, just fatter
-
Ready to give any UCD canoe club member a dead mans lift back to the gaf or just to the bar...
:)
-
the course is explained in the link manda put up earlier in the thread. its 5.5 or 11km depending on the class
-
I dont like the look of the course its a bit cruel. If your slow and tired and generally crap you have to watch all the people who are way better paddling past you in the opposite direction to the finish line. If it was a straight run then you could pretend that everyone was only just ahead of you. Also I cant remember how good I am at paddling in a straight line. so I think I'm going to have a weekend of drinking who's with me??
-
I am certainly in for the weekend of drinking, but I still want to do the long distance.
-
Coolio
-
How fit does one have to be for this? If the answer is not super-fit or something, I like to give it a go.
-
don't worry Karen, you don't have to be as super fit as me to compete in the long distance. Siobhan's right-one look at me will tell you that I am built for such hardcore sporting activities but not everyone can be as great as me.
Thanks for pointing that out Siobhan
-
i'd consider it so long as it doesn't get in the way of too much drinking
-
You're not allowed consider evan. YOU'RE IN!!!
Just by posting up on this thread you have automatically signed up for the long distance. So have you karen, arron, Jevon and nuala
I'm all up for a weekend of drinking but somewhere during those two days you'll have to leave the hostel and actually join in on the kayaking festivities.
