There was a recent case of Weil's disease reported to the ICU. Even though it is very rare, it is important to know about Weil's Disease and Leptospirosis.
You can check out the Weils Disease info link on this site, also http://www.leptospirosis.org/ (http://www.leptospirosis.org/).
If you have flu-like symptoms about 10 days to 2 weeks after paddling, say to your doctor that you might have Weil's and they will put you on antibiotics.

Mention you where paddling in the liffey. Also nine times out of ten it will be just the flu or a cold. When Aodhan and Eoghan had it they described it as the worst flu they ever had with severe muscle pain, other strains don't cause as much problems.
-
it got me 6 weeks off school about 3 years ago :D
only good thing about it
other than that its horrible
-
Yeah we have a fella at the moment in ICU. He's going to be fine.
But it's definitely important to stress the need for a simple blood test if you have a BAD flu 7-10 days after paddling.
It's tres rare, but keep yourselves informed all the same ;-)

I will be there on Thursday if the weather isn't bad!
What sort of an excuse is that?
-
thursday is indoors.......
-
So you are a fair weather paddler?
Best of luck with that.
-
extreme outdoor chess
sounds good
let us know how its goes
we'll be busy doing important stuff like.....drinking?
-
No reason why you couldn't drink and play chess at the same time...
And seriously what has bad weather got to do with not paddling?? ???
Oh no, I couldn't go to the swimming pool full of water or the river also involving water lots of it in bad weather... because I might get wet. ???
-
At least it's hard to get Weil's disease playing chess...
Even extreme alcoholic outdoor chess...
-
You'd be surprised how much those chess boys drink on their weekends away. I've heard stories...

that's how this got invented

Drinking chess is awesome, replace all the little figure with shots of varying strength (pawns = mickey finns & Queens = absinthe or something). No more ICU bashing please...
-
kylie said it best.... awesome!!
i'm not really a fan of chess, i mean its pretty nerdy. BUT drinking chess is savage, by the time you're down to your king, you really can't tell the difference between a horse and a castle, and you just want the game to end because your feeling pretty sick!!!
+ plus its far better than kayaking. i mean com'on people, does anyone even enjoy kayaking????
-
go for drinking draughts. make an assortment of different and incompatible drinks.
when you king a piece, you pour the two drinks into one glass. regardless.
adds a whole new level of strategy. sure you can double-jump him and get a king out of it... but the piece is mickey finn's and your crowning drink is tia maria :-\
-
Right, forget chess.
I don't want to walk in the rain to the pool, that's what I mean by bad weather!
-
it's not raining tonight. suck it up.
-
I actually went, so there!
-
asho as PRO you're gona have to organise a drinking chess game???
-
i cant remember how to play chess!!
but eh yeh..... board at 2 bring chess n beer!!
Im going back to bed....
-
I'd prefer you just got your coat...
-
hate to bring this back on topic but if you present to your doctor and think you might have weils DON'T let them fob you off with a broad spectrum antibiotic. you might aswell eat some smarties. if you develop muscle cramps and/or go a bit yelow (juandice) go straight A & E don't pass go, don't collect €200. the only cure for weils is IV penicillan.
all that said you probably don't have it so man up and have a beer.
-
you might aswell eat some smarties.
hmmm delicious placebos *drool*

Just to bring this back to the topic, Irish Freestyle are attempting to get a record of people who have contracted water borne diseases from the Liffey (mainly Weil's). If anybody has and wants to let them know here's the link:
