Howdy folks
On Sunday the 21 March there is a plan for an international effort to clean up areas of rivers, lakes and coasts.
As part of this clean-up day, we propose to clean up the banks of the Dodder at Clonskeagh Bridge - both upstream and downstream of the bridge. This is a great, local spot that could be a brilliant location for training in the future.
As some of you already know, in the last few weeks Benny has been talking about us using this site as a location for flatwater teaching, polo and slalom training, as well as a handy spot to practice a bit of flatwater freestyle. With difficult access to the bank downstream of the bridge, lines for slalom gates and polo goals would hopefully not be messed with. And with Clonskeagh Bridge being only 400m from the boathouse, it's a short walk/drive to get there.
The water quality is similar to the Liffey at Lucan, but the banks could do with a clean-up, with rubbish and some overhanging trees along the river.
So, we are looking for volunteers to come out on the day - Sunday the 21 March - and help in the clean-up effort.
We'll post up more information closer to the time.
These posters give you an idea of what the day's about:

So post up here if you're interested.
Thanks

-
also the wier in the poster is on the dodder,at rathgar and is very gud, just that eddy is recirculating and holds all the shit
-
I'll help out if i'm around 8)
-
I'm in! Don't believe me though, I probably won't show up.
I'm still bitter.

I might be persuaded, however you should make an effort to get a bit of publicity out of it, either write an article for the college rags or get them involved as well. We do some nice things it would help raise the profile of the club.
If it is being run through the ICU I assume they will contact the local county council to get you guys some proper bins and stuff. You will also need latex gloves plus garden gloves.
Claire Cryan your school uses the dodder might be worth contacting them as well to join in.
If the ICU do not contact the local county council, you should get onto the environment officer in the county council and arrange a pick up for the rubbish you collect plus a photo opp for the council.
-
I'm definitely in.
All the local scout groups in the area and all of Dublin have been contacted - it's a fairly big event planned. Also Benny was saying RTE are thinking of covering it.
-
Ye i'm in if i'm around
We really should get the pubicity running - talking to the college papers is a pretty good plan as it'd raise the profile of the club. And talking to the council's a must
-
il definately help out if im free!!!!
-
I was on the ICU website and your cleanup isn't on the site have you gotten back in contact with louise to confirm?
-
Edit - I've edited the cleanup info on the site below. It now shows the right location on the map.

What time would we doing this? Have you guys contacted local papers? If you can get it into an issue you might get more volunteers. Also have you tried UCD's green party some of them do like to be green. Also might be woth contacting the school of biology and environmental studies as they might want to volunteer some people.

I'm up for it!
It gives me an excuse to wear my pink rubber gloves! :P

What time are we meeting, and is it boathouse or at the Clonskeagh house?
-
Ok guys, just a few things before the clean up this Sunday...
Meet at Clonskeagh Bridge at 11am. From there we'll split people up to tidy different parts of the river.
Also, I'll need a few people to come to the boathouse for about 10, just to bring down some things to the site.
WEAR GLOVES!!! Bring some rubber gloves or something and wear them while you are cleaning.
We have been provided with bin bags to collect everything in, and I will be talking to the council tomorrow about collecting the rubbish at the end of the day.
Bring a camera to take loadsa pretty pictures!!
Hope to see you all on Sunday. Thanks very much in advance for everyone who comes out and gives a hand, any and all help is much appreciated.

boats and gear?
-
FUCK! I've got to work this sunday. I was really looking forward to helping out with this. Sorry folks :( >:(
-
We might need one or two people on the water for stuff that's hard to reach fro the bank, but I don't think everyone will need gear.
-
Hey guys, just as a thank you for all those who help out tomorrow, the clonskeagh house, right beside the polo pitch on the dodder is serving finger food for us tomorrow whenever we finish the clean up, so as soon as we finish the clean up, everyone meet inside the clonskeagh house for some free food
-
Thanks very much to everyone who came out. Everyone did an amazing job, and you could really see the difference after!
To everyone that wasn't there... I'm comin for ya! evil.gif

You on the RTE!

Okay so who wants to write this up all pretty with words, punctuation and get it published in the college rags? Also how many bags did we have by the end of it? What percentage do we think was plstic packaging waste, I think it was around 40% not including the car.
