Title: Deaths in Waterford
Post by: Matt on April 08, 2010, 17:28:50
Condolences to the families of two kayakers who drowned last night on a river in Co. Waterford. It happened on a weir on the River Clodagh.

From the RTE clip, it looks like the weir was absolutely lethal.

How terrible.

Dreadful recirculation on that stopper.

What the journalist says at the end of the clip is such a stupid thing to say.

Exactly what i thought... maybe they should think twice about having a death trap in a town... not just kayakers end up in rivers

From our own experience we should treat everything in the media with a large pinch of salt.

Wholly agree with you Jody. It would be so easy to make a weir like that much safer but there's never enough pressure to convince officials to do anything about them. Perhaps it's about time we got together on trying to have weirs improved for safety purposes while still fulfilling their use. It would benefit all river users and members of the public who are (to the best of my knowledge) the more common victims of dangerous weirs.

My heart goes out to everyone who will have to take the time to overcome the massive anguish this tragedy will have caused them.
