Right, so here we go... I know a lot of this has been said before (here (http://www.ucdcanoeclub.com/index.php/topic,8067.0.html)), but I thought, sure why not bring it up again!
I've been thinking about Kerry next year, and I propose moving the club to Glenbeigh. There's a few reasons for this:
1) The ice boxes were, again, pretty damn miserable this year. I know this winter was very cold, but I think when you can see your own breath in the bedrooms and you have stuff freezing solid against the windows, it's time to find somewhere else.
2) We'd be close enough to Rossbeigh that we could still go to the Ross Inn. Also there's more pubs in Glenbeigh that we could go to.
3) While it's great to have the beach in Rossbeigh, there's hardly ever surf, so it's not really worth staying for.
4) We'd still be close to all the rivers we usually do, as opposed to moving to another part of Kerry where we'd be further away from stuff.
There's a few more I can't think of at the moment, but hey.
So unless anybody has any major objections, the plan is to look into staying in Glenbeigh.
Post up what you guys think
Matt :blank:

WAAA WAAA WAAA WaAA WAAA
-
Here here, lets do it.
-
I, for one, am against any form of change whatsoever but will go to Kerry anyway and spend my entire time talking about how much better the ice-boxes were.
better in my day, etc.
-
P.S. The last time the club stayed in Glenbeigh it was class.

Edit: better in my day
Haha nice 1 jer, that's the Canoe Club way. Although i'm pro-glenbeigh, i might just join you.
-
Remember when everyone had to pile into one room wearing full outdoor gear and crowd around the fire to stay even remotely warm? Now everyone just lounges about with their double-glazed windows, a heating system that works and walls which are capable of retaining heat. It's destroying the integrity of the canoe club.
-
Is it just UCD moving with everyone else staying in Rossbeigh or are others moving down to Glenbeigh as well?
-
i didnt make it to kerry cos i wasnt well enough so i cant really talk. but personally i dont like a cold night indoors after a cold day outdoors or on the river. also so many people come back sick from it hardly seems worth it.
-
we stayed in glenbeigh my fresher year it was great! houses were ten times nicer and the walk to the ross inn provides plenty of pre drinking time and isnt that far when your locked. the ice boxes and the houses around it are a rip off, really cold and just give everyone bronchitis or pneumonia.
-
I have absolutely no problem with the club going to glenbeigh so long as I don't have to be anywhere near them . If you can get a good deal on houses then go for it. In my first year we where up the hill in glenbeigh, it was great the walk is always fun with a few people just remember to bring a head torch.
When you where saying a can of worms I thought you where going to suggest that the club book enough houses for everyone and run them like private houses, each house having it's own crew. As far as I know you guys spent about 120 for the week each for the icebox combos. In glenbeigh you can get a house for 600 or less and split that by eight, still comfortable but not too messy throw in 200 for food and heating and you are talking 100 each.
Or really opening a can of worms and suggest moving to donegal for new years!
-
Move, the ice boxes are crap with their over priced electricity. It takes a week to de-frost them, its only the last day or 2 they warm up enough to dry the kitchen floors. Modern house would have more than one bathroom. In the past clubs would drink one night ( usually the 30th) in Glenbeigh, thats one night less to walk if ye could get that tradition revived.
Also the Behy river can be paddled instead of surf.
-
Yeh I stayed in the club house in Glenbeigh my first year, was awesome and then we stayed in Glenbeigh in a private house the year just gone. Absolutely no problems. Someone will usually drive down to the pub or theres a guy with a mini-van taxi who charges a euro/2 euro each for the spin down if you're feeling lazy. The taxi dude usually did lifts home too but with the ice he didn't. Took about 20 minutes to walk home in my head but that was including people falling over every 5 minutes (hilarious) and walking slowly to dodge the ice! haha
When I saw the can o worms at the top of the post I thought you were going to try move it. Most oldies stay in Glenbeigh anyways - no biggie at all. Definitely go for it!
-
I thought there were supposed to be worms in this can?
It seems the only controversy here is that empty can someone sold you. I'd be looking for my worms or a refund.
-
all for it lol-had bronchitis leaving kerry this year :-P
-
Wah wah wah cold, wah wah wah walls, wah wah wah moan. I like the ice boxes, it's not too cold and I didn't get sick and I rolled around in the snow a lot!!
But, I also like wearing womens shoes so my opinion doesn't count.
-
I didn't get sick
One night I had to keep you propped up on your side because I was afraid you'd throw up. Then you woke up sat up on the bed and puked all over the floor.
-
That's a different sick, I did that on purpose. I mean ammune system deficient sick! Fecking eejit.

Ahem (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/ammune)...Fecking eejit
;D
-
It's an immune system Leighton. Maybe you're describing some sort of ammunition system???
Everyone gets the Kerry cold no matter where you stay. At least in a nice house you know it's just a cold and not something crazy from the mould in the iceboxes.
-
i'm not swayed either way both have their pros and cons...could be cool to try something new alright...
i agree with Ley although i don't wear womens shoes!and i have an immune system no ammo in me! :)
Remember when everyone had to pile into one room wearing full outdoor gear and crowd around the fire to stay even remotely warm?
some atmosphere though.... 8)
-
It doesn't matter where you stay you will get a great atmosphere going, when we moved to castlegregory there was a good atmosphere there. I would say however that keeping the club house tidy has dropped off in recent years, not sure if it is due to the fact so many of you still live at home and using a brush is something you only do with your hair? Now that last sentence should get some worms going in this post!
-
ha yeah you've just tossed a grenade into that can of worms! the party house was tidy enough....certainly cudos to bill and robyn who kept the smaller one constantly tidy!! did you see it? coz it wasn't a mess at all...
i didn't mean that there wouldn't be a great atmosphere if we moved (there obviously will be a great atmosphere regardless)- i was just pointing out that there was a great atmosphere despite to the cold!it meanyt we all had to get cosy... :)

The club house isn't supposed to be "tidy"
-
When I stayed in the club house in first year there was nearly 30 people in it and it was far cleaner than I have seen the club house over the last few years. Every morning before paddling all the sleeping bags and gear were stored away because the landlord could come at anytime. If you weren't paddling you were expected to clean. When you came back from the river you sorted your gear, then your food and then you cleaned up before continuing your boozing. With so many people in a house you just couldn't do it any other way. So young people today are lazy and need a haircut. This should continue tickling the worms so that there is some sort of argument going!
-

Was I that drunk as i don't remember then as being that bad? It is hard to really clean a house where the floors won't dry and warm water is hard to come by. Be nice kieran.
I do think the club should move just for value for money. A move could see the club with three houses and maybe even a person per bed at the beginning and end of the week. You should almost have payed the fresher to stay in last years party house. It was colder inside then out. This is the second year there has been ice on the walk home you can assume it will be another cold one next year.
There is nothing quite like walking into a house to the humming of an oil boiler to welcome you when there is snow on the ground.
Glenbeigh would see the people having to pay for a taxi (2/3 euro a head) or walking to the Ross Inn, a distance of what 2km and you can always cycle. How many of ye are living further then that from campus?
The Ross Inn although an improvement on the year before isn't great. It can be cold and hard to order a drink. Spending a night or two drinking in the village would take a change of habit for the club and not all the other clubs will follow, but then again you would only be cleaning up your own mess the following morning. New years and busyer night could still be spent in the Ross.
It might be worth looking into moving the table quiz to the village. The towers or the glenbeigh hotel would probably be more welcoming of the business and might provide stop prizes or even overly salted chips were closing time should be.
If staying in glenbeigh you can walk to the shop to re buy the sausages the oldies stole the night before there is also a take away for visiting on that drunken stroll home.

I was nice! If I was renting a property and saw what condition it's in after only two or three days of us being there I would rise my rent accordingly. I think we should look at donegal as an option, loads of rivers we haven't done and there are similar villages near the sea with holiday homes.
-

:o
A person per bed?! Whatever this madness is.... I like the sound of it! Goodbye two seater couch....
You should almost have payed the fresher to stay in last years party house.
I'll take mine in cash thank you very much.
But yeah moving sounds like a good plan to me, I mean no matter where we are the banter will be mighty!
-

Why would you want only one per bed. The premium on beds is, was and always will be intentional.
I think the club should stay in Rossbeigh, I like Glenbeigh...
-
Hey manda, I think the only problem with the ross in and spending a night in glenbeigh and stuff is that if the ownwers of the ross Inn are the same next year and there is a few nights where its dead they might not even open the next year.
This year I rang the pub before they closed for the winter to make sure they were gonna be open, I had to promise them there'd be shit loads of people for 6 nights straight for them to be open. And i asked them at the end of the week how business was and they said it was ok - Not great, and that they lost a bit of money from stuff being stolen.
I'm not sure, even having the ross inn open for kerry should be taken as read any more, as u all know the ross inn only opens for the kayaking community for that week, otherwise it closes from late october to late april (around those dates anyway).
Anyway like I said i'm looking forward to Glenbeigh but the whole ross inn thing may be different
-
I agree Kylie they should live in miserable cold conditions, how else are they going to enjoy a private house if they don't.
-
I think I'll just book a hostel in Dublin for the club for Kerry, then everyone can be dissappointed!!
And in Malagasy its spelt ammune.
-
Yes! Let's move. Those houses were horrendous and miserable. Not to mention environmentally disastrous and financially ridiculous.
Why undermine the good time we all go there to have?
Insulation, double glazing, electricity for less than €2 a half hour, heating, more beds...
YES PLEASE
-
lol thanks eoghan. bills generally a tidier but the obsessive tidiness on my part was mostly a product of annoyance at being too sick/drunk to paddle most days. (and before anyone tries to claim you cant be too drunk...yes, yes you can. and i can prove it by the fact that i tried to put my BA under my wetsuit one morning after. then promptly gave up on the paddling idea when i realised there was something amiss, then tidied some more and rediscovered the morning can :-P)
but sure the cold was character building i guess.. still vote glenbeigh though. :-D
-
There are a number of options in Glenbeigh, you should check out the http://www.thesleepycamel.com/index.html (http://www.thesleepycamel.com/index.html) it's a hostel and they run outdoor weekends so should be used to outdoorsie people.
We stayed in very nice houses, but if you go for those I would recomend having the right number for each house, they can sleep eight comfortably. I would also point out that the landlady's daughter lives in the estate as well.
-
The club has stayed a number of times in Glenbeigh in the late nighties and still made it to rossbeigh most nights.
a good set of houses for the club is Falveys on the high road glenbeigh
