Some tips on staying warm
I just though I would add some tips on staying warm on the river as the weather is getting much colder. I noticed people getting cold last Saturday and I know I was so cold all the time when I was new because I didn't know how to dress for the river, don't let the same happen to you!:
Thermals- you will hear people mentioning these a lot, and might not know what they really are... Thermals are basically clothes which trap the warmth of your body and help keep you cosy on the river. It is possible to buy actual thermals from shops, however fleeces keep you just as warm and most people have some of them at home. If you own a rash vest or anything like that, put that on too. The more layers the warmer!
Tights- these keep you very warm although you may not think it. Any old pair will do (as long as it is a man made material- not cotton or wool etc). Get a pair with holes you don't wear anymore and wear two pairs you'll be even warmer!
Pink Furry socks- Those big furry man socks you get from places like pennies (once again artificial materials poly anything not wool or cotton etc)... Apparently they keep your feet warm. The pink colour is optional although Karen seems to think these look the coolest! Ski socks can work too
OTHER THINGS- They say you lose most your heat through your head. so there are people around who wear a swimming hat (one of the plasticy ones) under their helmet kayaking in the winter- traps heat AND keeps your hair dry when you capsize! bingo!
LAYERS- Don't just put on ONE fleece/thermal put on lots! and if people offer you more put them on too!
EATING LOTS- get fat, it keeps you warmer
Ok this is all I can think of so far... If anyone has any other tips post them up, or point out anything I mentioned wrong!
Carla
And please please, PLEASE! IF YOU'RE COMING ON THE TRIP POST UP HERE!! WE DON'T BITE!

What time should we be back at UCD for?
Change of plan guys. We'll be heading back to the Liffey on Saturday. Meet at the boathouse at 10 still
For anyone who needed to be back early this is an improvement - Liffey's closer than the Boyne. Also Liffey should be at a sweet level - not scary, just fun. Hope ye all have a savage day, I'll probably be missing this one.
I'll be there
I'm in :)
Does one of the lovely kayaking girls maybe have a spare wetsuit (without holes ;) ) and a pair of neoprean socks I could borrow? I don't think I will survive another Capsize in my sandals (freezing cold).
Cheers, Liv
If you're around at lunch time I have a few bits of gear in the car you can borrow, might have a wetsuit not sure, might have socks also not sure. I'll be at the board around one.
I'll hopefully be there :D
Just a quick question - If I have no thermal gear, am I going to freeze?

If you swim you'll get cold alright, even if you don't, it's still better to have thermals. All so us wear thermals cause it can get very cold, depending on the weather!!

Bring 2 pairs of old tights if you have them (you have to have some lying around!),
If you have a fleece bring it, but as you saw last week, people will bring spares for anyone who doesn't have any

I have a spare wetsuit, its in with all the club wetsuits as I lent it to someone and they threw it in with all the rest on one of the trips. Need to remember to go find it. There are some grand club wetsuits with no holes if you look through them! although size can sometimes be an issue...
sorry no shoes! get some shitty shoes for a few euro in penneys next time your there maybe :)

I have nothing xD
I don't wear tights so I didn't bring any with me (I'll try to remember when I go back to Limerick). And I have no fleeces or anything that will keep me warm since I don't tend to wear anything like that.
I don't mind the cold, but 3 hours in water in November with the possibility of capsizing is pushing it.

There's gonna be a pretty solid "ring"ing in your ears when i box them with my "girly" fists.
Penny's do termals, as do dunnes at around 12 euro for a top and the same for bottoms. I would say some people will have spare gear tomorrow but make sure to pop into Tesco and buy some tights, you can make a set of termals out of them. I'm sure they are no more expensive than socks at €3 for three pairs of socks. If you want I do have some stuff in the back of my car and I am in UCD till 7 or 8 this evening you can have look and see if anything will fit.

haha yeah we're really gonna have to get a 'like' button for this forum ;) afro.gif
Why the like button? Can u not just put the effort in and say u like it and insert some witty comment, i guess that's beyond u eoghan ey? Man up
Rog, Aisling gave me something for you, "y" and "o", don't know why? She seemed annoyed about something.
Y in the hell wud asho b so anyd abt that? u don't agree wit it kieran d ya?
If you've a full qwerty keyboard in front of you and no size limit, then I am afraid that I hate the use of "Txt" speak. It seems rather lazy when it would take no time what so ever to type the full word! Don't get me wrong I enjoy winding Aisling up over your, you're, their and they're as much as the next man but I find text speak just annoying on computers.
ok
In my humble opinion, language is there to be abused. No progress without innovation, I say. If Shakespeare hadn't invented the English language back in 1746, where would we be today? I'll tell you where: we'd still be speaking French like our caveman/cavewoman ancestors.
So there.
lol rofl tlk 2 u l8r ;D
No such thing as a humble opinion. The very act of stating an opinion is anything but humble; it is an act of arrogance or aggression to provoke comment and criticism. It is one of ego and as such does not lend itself to humility.
On a different topic, how was the trip? Was everyone warm enough and was hot blackcurrant doled out to the needy with choclate to the fat kids?
:-* :-* :-*
wat
U know what they say kieran assholes are a bit like kangaroo's, everyone has one and they all jump!!!
