Included in the trip is 5 days of kayaking, a 2 day hike, 2 overnight train journeys and village & temple visits. Read on for more details;
The Tons River Expedition
Dates: April 10th - 19th
Whitewater: Class III (IV)
More Info & Photos: http://www.intoindia.com/tons.htmlThe style of white-water on the Tons river is quite different to most Himalayan rivers. Most rapids are best descried as medium volume ‘boulder garden’ in style. The river, which is continuous and quite steep, is best suited to rafters wanting a physical challenge and kayakers with class IV experience.
This adventure holiday is for those who want to enjoy trekking and river running in India. The adventure starts with 2 half day river trips with afternoons spent walking through alpine forests or relaxing in fields of wild mint and marijuana. We then depart on 2 days of trekking in the Himalayas, camping out overnight. The final 3 days of the holiday are spent on a 60km action packed, self-contained river expedition.
Day 1: Arrive in Delhi - Overnight train to Dehradun.
Arrive in Delhi airport. Transfer from the airport to the hotel. Spend the afternoon and evening relaxing in your hotel room or taking in the sights of Delhi. Evening transfer to the train station for the overnight sleeper train to Dehradun at 22.10. We travel by A/C sleeper train, the best and most comfortable way to travel overland in India.
Day 2: Dehradun to Tons Valley: 4 hrs
We travel in private vehicles from Dehradun to our fixed camp on the Tons River (435 km) We break the journey up stopping for plenty of chai (sweet milky tea). We arrive at Lunagad for a hot lunch. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon and dinner around the camp fire. Overnight camp.
Days 3 & 4: Rafting
Raft on the Tons from Mori to Khunigad. We start with a comprehensive safety talk and get everybody familiar with being on the river. These two days are great river sections for rafts and kayaks. We come back to stay at Camp Lunagad each evening, to discuss the days adventures over great food in a relaxing setting.
Days 5 & 6: Trekking
We trek up to Ringalli Rest House - an old British Rest House - in time for lunch and we set up camp in the area. Enjoy the great views, walk through the villages and meeting the local people. Return to Camp Lunagad by the afternoon of the fifth day for lunch. Have a relaxing afternoon . Prepare all the gear for the self-contained river expedition starting tomorrow.

We drive downriver for two hours to reach Tiuni ,the starting point of our river expedition. Here the Pabbar river joins the Tons and the river increases in size and volume. We move downriver into the more tropical part of the valley which has excellent white-water. We paddle big white-water through amazing scenery, camping out on the side of the river each night. After a 60 km journey we reach the Icchari, our take-out point and the end of the expedition. From here we drive to Dehradun to catch the train to Delhi. Arrive in Delhi and transfer to the hotel.
