Trial run polo training on Wednesday
« on: March 26, 2013, 19:11:37 »
Hey guys,

The pool have offered to let us try out the pool on Wednesday and give polo training a go.
This'd be using a quarter of the pool while the beam is up in the middle.

The other quarter beside us will have a water polo team in it, while the rest of the pool will have swimmers.
This would be an opportunity to try put polo without the hassles of a buffer lane of stressed lifeguards who are worried we'll hit swimmers.

It'll be very important to make a good first impression.
The water polo club are used to having one quarter, so we're not taking space away from them, but they might still find kayaks weird and we've to make sure not to hit them.
If it goes well we've a good chance of having more suitable polo training conditions in the future.

EDIT: Wednesday, 21:00-22:30, polo, make EXCELLENT first impression

So, who wants to go?

02 Aoife Sheridan

Sure, and what kind of barrier is going to be between us and water polo?

I don't know...
Possibly just a rope. But because each side will occasionally throw the ball in to the other half neither can complain about that.

How did it go guys?

I snuck in to have a quick look, the lifeguards said that if players wanted they can put up a net along the boom.
There are a series of vertical poles that slot in to it, then a net that hangs along. There default set up is that they don't put it up, but if either of the water polo teams (or us now) wants to play towards the boom they just have to say it to the lifeguards and they'll put it up.
They reckon it's two metres high.

Anyway, it looked pretty good :)

Yup, I thought it was great and you could see people improving as we went.

It think that we should always have the net up, it's just better to avoid the risk. We did end-up knocking the ball into the other half on one occasion at the end...there was only one person in the whole other half of the pool and they really didn't seem to mind. So we got lucky!

Helmets - pretty, pretty please wear the ones with face-guards! There are currently 8 with then but we'll work on increasing that number ASAP. You all have lovely faces.

Anyway, what we did:
Keyboard passing drill
pass and move - line
dribble and passin a line
challenging for the ball
kick-off sprints
T-ing off
Possession drills
Match practice

What did people think?

Is there anything that people would like to do next week?
- I reckon maybe some stuff on boat-control and dip-turning? Along with practicing a lot of the stuff that we did today.

I thought having the quadrant to ourselves was brilliant - we were able to use the space so much more effectively. Woot!
