Liffey Descent Rescue - Sluice
« on: September 21, 2011, 21:24:24 »
Hey guys,

I'm organising rescue at sluice for the Liffey Descent, anyone interested?

- Save lives!
- Play on the wave at Sluice when the coast is clear
- Barge boats/rope swimmers to the bank
- 13:30 to 16:30 approximately (will be confirmed closer to the day, Saturday the 7th of October)

- Get a free LD Rescue t-shirt
- Free dinner at the finish line marquee
- Tickets to the after party

Post up if you're interested!

There is a role for bank based rescue. Emptying boats and putting people back in. I would say that the chicken shoot on the sluice is very overgrown at present so needs special attention ie some one in the water at any choke point to pull people out of trees.
Are you a life guard or have you been involved with boat rescue before? It's easy with a little practice to know how to rescue a boat but bank based stuff is all about lifitng out your casulity and getting them back in their boat.

You can probably sign me up for this. I think I'll be pulling out of the race - it's looking unlikely that a 28km race without prior training is going to be anything other than torture. Pity they changed the dates, before college starts is a way better time.

Cool! So I've got
- me
- Bill
- Mark
- Nuala
- Eoghan
- Steve Fahy
- Steve Fahy's friend
- Karen
- Cathy
- Hugh Verling

-> Helena: sluice itself requires a bit of very enjoyable but slightly tricky kayaking to get to, but we might be able to find a spot for you on the near bank (at the chicken chute like Kieran said) I'll find that out for you closer to the time  ;)

Just need two more!

theres a bridge upstream which u can cross to walk to sluice, yeah general puttin people into boats emptying boats the rescue boaters have grabbed and good old fashioned pushing people who accidentally edddy out.

You either have to have a level 3 or similar international award, compete in two of the river races leading up to it or get signed off on by a level 3 instructor who has seen you paddle and believes you can do it.

That's to compete in the race, to do rescue you need rope throwing/boat barging/swimmer fishing skills of some description. Which is it you're after Cathy?

Gareth: I'm not sure who's left competing, but if you go down sluice we'll give you a big cheer!  :D
