Hi all,
With the absence of a blondylad fond of rocks this year, I've been asked to organise this, the most illustrious of Pre-Ball Kayaking events in all of
Laragh! For those who don't know, this will take place the day of
Anna-Mayzing Ball on the
11th of March. It will cost
€5 per person to cover the prizes, payable on the day.
The
Team race will involve
3 people per team, 1 in their 1st or 2nd year of the club, 1 in their 3rd or 4th, and 1 in the club longer than they'd rather say. The team will make their way down the course as a group, and the last person to cross the line will be the time for the team, so it is in the teams best interest to stay together. At least 2 people have to run Jacksons. The finish line will be the hole of Jacksons. Time deductions may be made as follows:
- -10 seconds for plugging the hole of Jacksons (only given to one paddler per group)
- -15 seconds for all 3 paddlers running Jacksons
- -20 seconds for each paddler that catches the Energiser eddy
- -30 seconds for all 3 paddlers in Fancy Dress of some sort! (note: this should not interfere with your ability to swim, etc.)
BoaterX: The BoaterX (boater-cross) will be a race between 4 or 5 people down the course, the top 2 progressing to the next round. It, and the course, looks like
this. This will be split into Men and Womens categories, and depending on numbers, but further split into Fresher, Non-L3, and L3 or more categories.
Of the 5 Pre-ball events I've attended, I think we've only had 2 races, so obviously the weather is going to have to play ball with us, but if the much desired and mythicised rain does not arrive, there will be a back-up plan depending on who has signed up, etc, but may involve coaching and/or cliff jumping which I cannot guarantee will not result in a nail biting injury. So the current plan (which is so subject to change it hardly seems worth writing down) is this:- 0900: Meet at 9am in Lyhnams car park. Everyone gets changed.
- 0915: If by some miracle the stars align and we have 3 or 4 plus competitors capable of racing the Glenmacnass, we will run a time trial race of the car park section. If competitors aren't on the water on time, this won't go ahead. Hopefully while this is running everyone not involved will be moving to where the river crossing is.
- 0945: Safety briefing for all to attend
- 1015: Opportunity for people to run Jacksons if they wish.
- 1045: Start of Team Heats
- 1230: BoaterX heats will begin.
Prize giving will take place immediately afterwards in the car park. These will be of the alcoholic variety.
Prizes will be given for:- 1st & 2nd Team Run
- 1st/2nd Mens BoaterX
- 1st/2nd Womens BoaterX
- Best Competitor (For the individual who was both most helpful on the day and also gave the paddling their all)
- Best Line (may or may not be sarcstic, depending on how it goes)
- Best Swim
....possibly a few more sport prizes on the day.
So there you have it, I will be looking for people to help out with time keeping on the day, etc., so if you aren't paddling, come down and give me a hand, you'll get to use the Walkie-Talkies!
