So Uganda?
« on: March 21, 2017, 19:33:35 »
Yup, you heard right (or read even) a few of us have been entertaining the idea that we'd go to Uganda this year... And we've started to more than just entertain the idea. Anyone else tempted (more than just tempted is preferable)

I'm sure everyone's tempted anyway, cause you know... Uganda 😃 but how do you know your down for it? Well... We're trying to figure that out ourselves, but basically the main quote going is you need a solid roll and that's it (probably some other stuff too... But yeah) plan right now is head in and around 17th of August and then back before college. This looks to be possibly the last year you can do it too, as a dam is being built and will have flooded the last of the famous rapids

Who's down? 😁

The important stuff for this year:

Its been a while since I was there, but for what my 2c is worth.

Allow at least 6 weeks for vaccinations, preferably 8. http://www.tmb.ie/destinations/vaccinations-for-uganda

95% of horror stories from there started with ' I went to the bar and drank... now I am very broken' 4% were of the accidents were shuttle to and from the river related and probably 1% or less of accidents were river related.

Tips from Billy who went last year:

Cool, so if I was to go again I would do the following:
Book flights with Turkish or Brussels air if possible, and make sure my flight arrived in the daytime
Get the pineapple express to the NRE Campsite ( not hostel)
If there is more than two of you running the river pay a car for shuttle instead of bodas
So paddling wise start at superhole just to get used to it
Maybe run the river with the rafts or ask another paddler to show you the lines
Get used to big water in a playboat before you run the big rapids
Go RIGHT on Kalagala ( little tip there)
The lemon is more expensive but its literally paradise, you stay there to surf special, make sure you give yourself a good bit of time there, as you'll need it to learn the wave and logistics getting there are a pain
NRE is a good place to pick up advice, the kayak the Nile crew are awesome, and Sam is the man if you want a training day, maybe a few days in is the best time
Oh buy a Ugandan phone and I'll try think of more
Take large amounts of money out in town as there are very few ATM's, and expect little to no Internet

Tips from Liam in work who was out there 10 years ago:

Don't get a lift from a body driver who has a helmet
$100 bar tab in 4 days is bad
Nile special the drink doesn't suit pasty Irish people (alcohol)
Don't get a free bungee jump from a lad named Graham from Limerick
Check boat for spiders
Leave enough time to get to airport, may take 2 hours, may take 10
Buy clothes in penny's
Malarone anti malaria, daily, up to date version
Bring a throw rope for Nile Special
Don't sleep bollock naked in the pub. Guy got malaria.
They may offer it to you in Tesco sized shopping bags, but that shouldn't mean that you should try smoke all of it.
Practice holding your breath for a minute
Smallest boat possible so you get flushed out. Nothing over 70 litres. Don't bring a creeker.
You're not on a safari

Definitely go
