Title: Liffey Descent Rescue - Sluice
Post by: Maryanne on September 21, 2011, 21:24:24
Hey guys,

I'm organising rescue at sluice for the Liffey Descent, anyone interested?

- Save lives!
- Play on the wave at Sluice when the coast is clear
- Barge boats/rope swimmers to the bank
- 13:30 to 16:30 approximately (will be confirmed closer to the day, Saturday the 7th of October)

- Get a free LD Rescue t-shirt
- Free dinner at the finish line marquee
- Tickets to the after party

Post up if you're interested!

There is a role for bank based rescue. Emptying boats and putting people back in. I would say that the chicken shoot on the sluice is very overgrown at present so needs special attention ie some one in the water at any choke point to pull people out of trees.
Are you a life guard or have you been involved with boat rescue before? It's easy with a little practice to know how to rescue a boat but bank based stuff is all about lifitng out your casulity and getting them back in their boat.

You can probably sign me up for this. I think I'll be pulling out of the race - it's looking unlikely that a 28km race without prior training is going to be anything other than torture. Pity they changed the dates, before college starts is a way better time.

Cool! So I've got
- me
- Bill
- Mark
- Nuala
- Eoghan
- Steve Fahy
- Steve Fahy's friend
- Karen
- Cathy
- Hugh Verling

-> Helena: sluice itself requires a bit of very enjoyable but slightly tricky kayaking to get to, but we might be able to find a spot for you on the near bank (at the chicken chute like Kieran said) I'll find that out for you closer to the time  ;)

Just need two more!

You either have to have a level 3 or similar international award, compete in two of the river races leading up to it or get signed off on by a level 3 instructor who has seen you paddle and believes you can do it.

That's to compete in the race, to do rescue you need rope throwing/boat barging/swimmer fishing skills of some description. Which is it you're after Cathy?

Gareth: I'm not sure who's left competing, but if you go down sluice we'll give you a big cheer!  :D

Lol, 10-12/13 of my people are drivers.

So I need every one of them.
Go away.

:P

I'm not sure what I'm doing on Saturday morning yet, a certain Niall Bouchier needs a lift to the starting line...
Are people happy to meet at the boathouse in general? Cos then there'd be plenty of cars and stuff, we could divide up and go from there. Hugh Verling has a van, but no gear in the boathouse. Hmm. Logistics.

Got the email from Benny! Rescue is needed at sluice from 13:00-16:00

Final Liffey Notice

1   The bib collection will be at Salmon Leap Canoe Club (Leixlip Lake) from 5.00 pm to 9.00 pm on Friday 7th of Oct. T shirts, goodie bags, boat number can be collected there. Paddlers travelling long distances can collect bibs on Saturday morning at Staffan carpark (info centre).Wrist bands will be issued as meal tickets, please place on your wrist and exchange at the race finish for your free meal.

2   There will be boat checking in SLCC carpark on the Friday night to ease the pressure on Sat morning boat checking (as per previous years). Boats must have adequate buoyancy, rigid foam air bags etc. A sticker will be put on the boats once checked and passed

3   A Bus will be available before the start of the race leaving Trinity boathouse (the finish) at 10 am to arrive at the race start by 11 am. A bus will also be available after the race to bring paddler back to the start to collect cars leaving Trinity boathouse at 5 pm. It is important that paddlers book a place on the bus by Friday night at bib collection, the service is Free, but must be booked beforehand and a ticket received.

4   Paddlers must only park in the grass field opposite the Trinity boathouse, they must NOT park in the paved carpark adjacent to the Trinity boathouse (it is a condition of the use of the park by the OPW for public use, not associated with the Liffey Descent). Parking on the approach road to the War memorial park and Trinity boathouse in not permitted, the Gardai have indicated canoeists cars may be clamped if parked on the approach road.

5   The jungle has been trimmed and all obstacles removed however all paddlers are advised to proceed with caution through the jungle and take extreme care in overtaking. All paddlers are obliged to render assistance to distressed/swimming paddlers, failure to do so will result in sanctions being applied.

6   Boats must allow enough time to paddle up to the start line before the first start at 12.30. Paddlers are reminded that in strong flows this can take more than 30 minutes. Canadians and GPs must get on the water before 12 to allow enough time to reach the start.

7   The carpark for the start of the race is the new Smurfit Course carpark (as per 2010) which is on the Kill side (south bank) of Straffan. At the race start, cars parking and staying, should park on the left hand side, while cars dropping and going should stop on the right hand side of the Straffan car park.

8   Should you withdraw from the race at any point it is essential you inform the rescuers at the nearest weir to notify the timing station at the finish line so as rescuers are not sent out looking for missing paddlers.

9   As the race is later in the year than normal and daylight will fade sooner (6.30 pm), canoes that have not reached the portage by 3.30 pm will be required to withdraw from the race. Boats not reaching Wrens nest weir by 4.30 will also be required to withdraw from the race for safety reasons.

10   The race start sequence is
1   All racing K 2 classes
2   All racing single classes (K1, WW racer, junior senior, women and Masters
3   All T2s
4   GPs Mens Senior
5   All remaining GP, Veteran, Junior & Women
6   All Canadian (C1, C2, C3)

11   Race packs numbers and bibs will be issued at 4 separate desks on Friday
Desk 1 Desk 2 Desk 3 Desk 4 Desk 5
All racing classes (K1 K2 WW racer junior, senior, masters etc) All Canadian All GP All T2
All queries, late entries, bus tickets etc

12   There will be tea and coffee for sale at the start for a nominal fee, all proceeds are going to the slalom committee to support their fundraising efforts, please feel free to support them and benefit from a pre race coffee & cake

13   The Marathon committee will be selling raffle tickets to support the National team travelling to Singapore to the World Championships in October. There is over 1,500 euros work of prizes which will be raffled at the Post Race party.

14   The post race party will be in the Church bar (by Jervis street shopping centre) starting at 8 pm, entry & finger food is included in your race entry. Friends and family of canoeists welcome. The basement is booked for the party (with 2 bands (Inside Out) and a DJ playing) while upstairs the music will be a little more chilled – so something to cater for everyone.

Best of Luck Liffey Descent Committee 2011

Rigid foam would be for bouancy. If you have airbags that is your bouancy. What boat are you paddling? No you don't need both you've airbags for bouancy.

I think so, unless something crazy happens I'll be at the boathouse tomorrow morning

11:10 at boathouse ...pack boats
11:40 leave boathouse ...drive to sluice
12:20 sluice carpark ...get changed
12:50 on the water at sluice ...save lives
16:10 off the water ...get changed and drive to finish line
17:00 eat free dinner ...nyom nyom nyom
18:00 leave ...can go home via boathouse

I imagine the rigid foam might be a reference to a central pillar of some sort, depending on boal type obviously.

12:50 not 13:50, I really don't think anyone needs an hour and a half to get into their gear. I imagine that was understood.

QuoteHello all,

The Irish Canoe Union would like to extend its thanks and gratitude for your assistance in organising rescue for the 2011 Liffey Descent.  Without your commitment to coordinating and providing rescue a race of the size, quality and safety of the Liffey Descent would not be possible.  Please extend our largest thank you to all members of your rescue crew from us the Irish Canoe Union and from all of the competitors who entered the race and finished safely on the day.  The high quality of the rescue provided this year was commented on at several occasions by many paddlers following the race.

Thank you once again, and hope to see some, if not all, of you again next year!
