Here's the current gear lending policy and all the relevant parts of the safety document.
Below:
Phrases and conditions in the spirit of progressive private trips
Phrases and conditions which could limit the scope of private trips
Proposed alterations **may be subject to UCD/AUC approval, this remains to be seen**

1"Definition of a club trip" From Section 5 of the Safety Form
QuoteNon club sanctioned activities:
•   Do not have formal club approval.
•   Are not required to notify the Sports Office.
•   Must always comply with ICU (Irish Canoe Union) guidelines.
•   Do not receive club funding.
•   Do not require instructors or assigned leaders – although the group will take into the account the skill levels of each of its members and will usually assign informal leader(s) and form an order conscious of the positioning of less experienced members allowing stronger kayakers to keep close in case of difficulty. Club gear being used on a private trip may only be borrowed in accordance with the lending policy explained in section 11
.

2"Equipment Issues" From Section 11 of the Safety Form
QuoteThe club runs up to grade 3 water. Therefore, no club member may use club equipment on a higher grade of water.
Maybe we could try:"The club runs up to grade 3 water primarily. Therefore, no club member may use club equipment on a higher grade of water without being subject to special consideration." to provide a way around for special circumstances...

3"Required Committee Approval" From the Policy for Borrowing Gear
QuoteThe forms shall be signed by any two of, the training officer, the safety officer, the equipment officer or the captain.
If one of those two people is not the Captain, the Captain must in some way be informed of the intended river trip, and his or her approval must be sought and obtained.

"Equipment Issues" From Section 11 of the Safety Form
QuoteThe borrower must accept that although using club gear, the trip is not a UCD Canoe Club trip and thus the club accepts no responsibility for any consequences of the trip.

I always made sure to say in passing that it WASN'T a club trip [...] once the captain (ultimately responsible) trusts the leaders of the trip and knows the standard of the others isn't way below the standard required, and says that this is being classified "not" [a] club [trip] happy days!

ah thats the spanner! but yeah i don't imagine there would be any problem with the blue alteration in next years safety report. Because people running grade 4 in club gear would be unusual and a special consideration. That line is more correct really...I really like it...  :)

Regarding "You break it you bought it", consideration needs to be given to wear and tear too: club gear running more extreme rivers will result in a greater rate of gear damage. Whilst this is inevitable to a certain extent, people are less likely to report -say- a heavy impact to a club helmet than they are a hole in a boat. Members borrowing club gear for more difficult rivers would need to be conscientious about reporting all damage, not just if they holed a boat.

Sorry Diarmuid I'm useless to the club here - 'fraid my kind of law knowledge is limited to human rights.  I might be useful if we found somebody detained and tortured inside the boathouse though...

Any chance we could all just agree to call Jacksons grade 3+, not 4?

On the cost side of things. A full set of new gear costs about 2500.  The cost of running a car is about 2500 per year, transport is where the real cost of paddling is.
