the earth goes round because of the intrinsic momentum that existed in the early solar system as the planets coalesced. in the case of Earth, that's heavily modified by an early impact with a large body that caused the formation of our moon - in fact, I think maybe the earth even goes round the wrong way? or at least too slow. can't remember now...

No one likes a smart arse. Anyways, the sun still makes the Earth go round, I just didn't specify what it makes it go round.

actually I suppose technically my last post was why it goes around. what makes it go round is its own gravity combined with its prior liquid state.
